Here, you will complete registration formalities before starting your hike. From the very first steps, you leave behind the town and enter a world of fresh mountain air and dense tropical forest.
The Marangu Route is one of the most established and scenic paths on Kilimanjaro. The trail to Mandara Hut winds gently through a rich montane rainforest filled with towering trees, thick vegetation and vibrant plant life. The atmosphere is cool, peaceful and alive with the sounds of birds and wildlife. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating information about the mountain’s ecology, volcanic history and the local Chagga communities who live on its lower slopes. As you continue hiking, you may encounter playful black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the trees, as well as other primates and colourful bird species. The well-maintained path makes the hike accessible and enjoyable, allowing you to walk at a relaxed pace while fully immersing yourself in the natural surroundings.
After approximately 3 to 4 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, located at about 2,700 meters above sea level. This peaceful clearing in the forest offers a perfect resting point. Here, you can enjoy your packed lunch, relax and take in the serene mountain environment. On clear days, you may also take a short walk to the nearby Maundi Crater, which offers beautiful views toward the Kenyan plains and the surrounding forest canopy.
After spending time at Mandara Hut, you will begin your descent along the same Marangu Route. The return journey provides a different perspective of the forest, with new photo opportunities and a chance to further appreciate the beauty of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. The downhill walk is gentle and enjoyable, allowing you to fully absorb the experience. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi.
