We are deeply disappointed with our experience with African Safari Guru (owner: Matthew Grace) and want to share our story so that others are aware before booking.
• Feb 29, 2024 – Received a final itinerary for a 17-day safari (Aug 30 – Sept 15, 2025) for two couples at a total cost of $26,260 USD.
• Mar – Jun 2024 – Paid deposits and final balance in full. By June 5, 2025, the company had received 100% of our payment ($26,260 USD).
• Aug 10, 2025 (just 19 days before departure) – Mr. Grace emailed to cancel our entire trip due to his “financial hardship.” No refund details were provided.
• Aug 11–15, 2025 – Multiple calls and emails followed. Mr. Grace admitted most of the money was gone. He later offered us less than 10% back.
• Aug 15, 2025 – He issued a cancellation letter confirming a refund of only 46,816 Rand (≈$2,547 USD, ~9.7%) out of the $26,260 USD we had paid.
• During this same period, when contacted under a different name, Mr. Grace immediately provided a full itinerary and requested a 50% deposit for a new safari in 2026, showing he was still actively taking bookings.
• Sept 10, 2025 – After legal intervention, we received only a 9.7% refund. Mr. Grace has stated he cannot refund more.
Despite taking full payment well in advance, African Safari Guru cancelled our trip less than three weeks before departure and has withheld over 90% of our money.
We have involved lawyers and authorities in both South Africa and Canada to try to recover the funds and prevent this from happening to other travelers.
We strongly urge anyone considering booking with this company to exercise extreme caution.
