Itinerary

Day 1

Central Kalahari | Okavango Delta

Day 1 – Arrive Maun & fly to the Central Kalahari You will depart Johannesburg from O R Tambo International Airport for the short 2 hour flight to Maun at the southern point of the Okavango Delta. Joel & Pierre will transfer with you to your private aircraft for the flight to the Central Kalahari Lodge called “Dinaka” meaning “horns” in the Setswana language. On arrival at the airstrip we will be met by the guides and driven to the lodge where we will check in and relax after the days travel. Tea is usually served around 3pm to meet your guide, discuss what photographic lenses we will need, and Joel will advise you on camera settings for the lighting conditions we can expect. A cool box is packed with your sundowner drinks order as we will be stopping to enjoy the obligatory African sunset.

Day 2

Central Kalahari

Day 2 and 3 – Dinaka : the Central Kalahari Game Reserve http://www.kerdowneybotswana.com/our-camps/dinaka/ After a good nights sleep you will be woken by the camp staff with hot tea or coffee for the morning game drive. The light in the mornings of the Central Kalahari can be incredibly rewarding. Joel will once again advise what settings, lenses and equipment will be needed for the mornings excursion. The under-ground hide during the dry months can attract very good game sightings and cats that have not make a kill in the night are often seen at waterholes in the early hours of the morning. The under-ground hide offers a unique perspective for your photography. After the game drive is an opportunity to relax in the shade of your deck and soak up the incredible scenery the Central Kalahari presents. Guided walking safaris are also offered mornings and afternoons.

Day 4

Okavango Delta

Day 4 – Dinaka to Kanana http://www.kerdowneybotswana.com/our-camps/kanana/ After the morning game drive and a delicious breakfast, we fly to our next camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta – Kanana. Arriving mid afternoon there is a short drive to the lodge where we will be met by the camp staff and presented with our rooms overlooking the Xudum River. Rooms at Kanana all face the small lagoon where elephants, giraffe and many bird species can be seen. Tea at 3pm is in the main area of Kanana that has the deck wrapped around an old fig tree and overlooking the lagoon. Kanana’s rooms are sublimely beautiful with stunning views.

Day 5

Day 5 and 6 – Kanana With an early morning snack of muffins and tea or coffee we head off to explore the rich diversity of this private concession. Elephant, Lion, Wild Dog, Buffalo, Leopard, Jackal, Giraffe, Puku, Lechwe and a host of birds will keep you entertained, enthralled and producing award winning photography for you to take home with you. Kanana also has a heronry close by which is accessible by motorboat in the wet season and has an incredible array of bird species that flock to the area each year for breeding. The rooms at Kanana are luxuriously appointed. A small private deck in front overlooking the small lagoon is the prefect position to bird watch, read or simply take a nap while the hotter parts of the day dissipate to a manageable level. There is also a swimming pool for cooling off. Morning and evening game drives, guided walks and lush surroundings make Kanana an idyllic camp in which to experience the Okavango at its best.

Day 7

Day 7 – Kanana to Shinde http://www.kerdowneybotswana.com/our-camps/shinde/ A morning game drive will complete our stay at Kanana, after breakfast we will be driven to the airfield for the short flight to Shinde. Nestled on the edge of the Shinde lagoon rooms all face a magnificent open plain and your deck with some good binoculars is a great place for game spotting. Elephant often wander past. After checking in to your rooms there is the opportunity for a cool drink at the main area, a complimentary computer is available at all the camps for you to contact loved ones back home and share some of the incredible sightings you have had so far. Activities include mokoro trips, fishing, game drives and boat cruises through the pristine waterways of the Okavango – this is truly a magical place to enjoy all aspects of the rich diversity that this World Heritage Site has to offer.

Day 8

Day 8 and 9 – Shinde Early morning breakfasts at Shinde are on the main upper deck with sweeping views of the Shinde lagoon. After the morning game drive a mokoro (dugout canoe) trip is a relaxing experience allowing you to see the smaller, finer details of the Delta. Miniature bright red reed frogs, the Tilapia fish and in the distance the whoosh of exhaled air as a Hippo surfaces to breathe. The swimming pool at Shinde also overlooks the plain and with a delicious cocktail in hand you can soak up some sun, nap on your pool lounger and watch as the elephant herds wander by. Sundowners on your game drive are extra special, the Three Pans area is especially beautiful as the sun sets between the trees’ while you gaze out at the wide open plains of the Okavango.
