Itinerary

Day 1

South Luangwa

Day 1 – Livingstone to Mfuwe Lodge After a leisurely start to your day in Livingstone, Charles will collect us from the hotel and deliver us to the airport for our 12H30 flight to Lusaka. On arrival there a representative from the Bushcamp Company will meet us and ensure we board the smaller aircraft destined for Mfuwe International airport. On arrival at Mfuwe our guide and driver will drive us to the gates of South Luangwa National Park. Passing rural homes and Mfuwe village gives a good impression of the daily struggle the Zambian people endure, a brief glimpse into the culture and happiness of these people. On arrival at Mfuwe Lodge we will check in and enjoy the scenery Mfuwe Lodge has from the decks of your rooms. Meeting at 3pm for tea will give you time to meet your guide and get an impression for the past few days sightings and what to expect. Joel will advise everyone on what camera gear to bring along and settings for the light conditions. Joel has made use of Canon, Nikon and Sony products so will have no problems ensuring you’re set up just right!

Day 2

South Luangwa

Day 2 – Mfuwe Lodge & South Luangwa http://bushcampcompany.com/mfuwe_lodge.php After a good night’s rest there is a relatively early start for the morning drive. The area around Mfuwe Lodge has been well known for good game sightings and South Luangwa is said to have the highest concentration of Leopard of any park in Africa. If you would like to have a lazy start to the day the grounds of the lodge are always alive with different species of birds and mammals alike. Mfuwe lodge is world famous for the elephants that pass through the reception area each year, carefully climbing the steps to check on the mango trees and returning when sated. Leopard and Lion have been regular visitors to the grounds over the years. After your morning drive and a delicious breakfast, the afternoon can be passed lounging on your deck overlooking the lagoon, a special treat at the spa, bird watching, curio shopping, visiting the library or taking a well-deserved afternoon nap! Tea at three? We all meet at the main lodge for afternoon tea and cupcakes. Joel will once again advise on camera settings for the available light & we will set off on the afternoon drive. On your return to the lodge the guards will once again escort you to your room and collect you again for dinner – the ever-present hippo wandering around chomping on the grass make this a necessity.

Day 3

South Luangwa

Day 3 and 4 – Chindeni Bushcamp http://bushcampcompany.com/bushcamps/chindeni.php After the morning game drive, we will pack our bags and head off into the wilderness of South Luangwa for our first Bushcamp destination. Chindeni is situated on the banks of an oxbow lagoon with fantastic panoramic views of the Chindeni Hills. An afternoon spent on your deck with binoculars is a kaleidoscope of giraffe, elephant, kudu, hippo, crocodile and a huge array of endemic bird species. All the tents look out over a cut-off oxbow lake that sports a wide variety of wildlife with the main deck under a thick Ebony tree providing welcome shade from the afternoon sun. Your room is spacious and very comfortable, designed for airflow and a patio on which to relax during the day. After a languid day on your deck, we will meet for the afternoon game drive. Joel will once again give advice on lenses and settings for the available light and while you are on your game drive.

Day 5

South Luangwa

Day 5 and 6 – Bilimungwe Bushcamp http://bushcampcompany.com/bushcamps/bilimungwe.php A walking safari with your guide and the Zambia Wildlife Authority Scout is an experience you will not soon forget. As the Bushcamp Company says, “From a vehicle you see Africa. On foot you feel, hear & smell Africa”. The bush camps have been designed around walking safari’s and as South Luangwa is the home of the walking safari first introduced by Norman Carr back in the 1920’s we would encourage you to do as many walks as possible. Set beneath a huge Mahogany, tree Bilimungwe is a cool and shady camp from which to enjoy the sights and sounds of the 3 waterholes this camp overlooks. Award winning resident guide Manda Chisanga will show you the intricacies of the bush, where small meets large and the interconnectedness comes together in a puzzle of ecosystems that lets all the species to live in harmony and help each other survive daily.

Day 7

Day 7 and 8 – Kapamba Bushcamp http://bushcampcompany.com/bushcamps/kapamba.php After enjoying the coziness of Bilimungwe we depart for the short journey to Kapamba Bushcamp. This is by far Pierre’s favorite camp. Sent on the banks of the Kapamba River with concertina curtains, the most incredible bath in the world and a tranquility no other camp can provide Kapamba is the epitome of the African Bushcamp. We will spend another 2 days here with the focus on drives and walks to experience the magic of the bush deep in the heart of the National Park. At the confluence of the Kapamba and Luangwa Rivers is a sandbank that offers beautiful panoramic views of the Chindeni hills, we will sit and enjoy a sundowner Gin & Tonic as the sun streaks pinks and purples to the West at the end of another perfect day in Africa.

Day 9

Day 9 and 10 – Kuyenda After our last morning drive at Kapamba we will game drive North to the small camp of Kuyenda close to Mfuwe Lodge. Here the rooms are small “rondavels” (a round grass hut) with simple furnishings yet with elegantly appointed rooms and the real feel of how Africans live in the bush. Once again, we will do game drives and walks in the mornings and evenings. Kuyenda is known for leopards! Buffalo and elephant are also regular visitors as the camp is set up under a grove of African Ebony trees. At night, the open plains around the camp allow for the lion’s roars to echo and carry across the plains and they can often be heard in the early evenings as they call their territory to other lions in the area. Hyena giggling will let everyone know a kill has been made and the morning game drive could be filled with excitement as we head out to look for the kill. Morning walks can be the most thrilling experience as the grass rustles past your legs and the birds start calling. Each sound amplified by the near silence as each animal in turn starts its morning vocalizations. This is the golden hour for photography and once again Joel will advise on settings for light and ideal focal lengths.

Day 11

Day 11 – Kuyenda to Livingstone With an early morning start to the day we will game drive back to Mfuwe Lodge and on to Mfuwe International Airport.
