Experience an unforgettable 5-day adventure to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route, popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route.” This classic trail approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeastern side and is the only main route where trekkers sleep in mountain huts rather than tents. The journey begins at Marangu Gate and passes through several spectacular ecological zones, from lush montane rainforest to open moorland, alpine desert and finally the Arctic summit zone. Along the way, you will stay at Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut. The highlight of the trek is summit day, when you begin the challenging ascent from Kibo Hut toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. After celebrating your achievement at the Roof of Africa, you descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest before completing the descent to Marangu Gate. The 5-day itinerary is suitable for experienced trekkers or travelers who prefer a shorter Kilimanjaro climbing programme. Because it provides less acclimatization time than the 6-day Marangu itinerary, trekkers should be physically prepared and follow the guide’s advice throughout the climb.

Itinerary
Arrival day
Arrive in Tanzania and meet your representative at the airport. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for check-in, briefing and preparation for the Kilimanjaro climb. Overnight in Moshi.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where you complete park registration and meet your mountain crew. The trek then starts through the beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation and birdlife, and you may have opportunities to see monkeys along the way. Continue gradually uphill until you reach Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop on the mountain. After settling in, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful forest environment.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, continue climbing through the forest before entering the open moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically, with giant heathers, lobelias and other high-altitude vegetation. As you approach Horombo Hut, you will enjoy impressive views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut and spend the evening resting and preparing for the next stage of the climb.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
You leave the moorland behind and cross the famous Saddle, the high-altitude area between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert environment. Continue toward Kibo Hut, the final overnight point before the summit attempt. After arriving, have an early meal, rest and prepare your equipment for the challenging summit night.

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horomb
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb. Begin the summit attempt during the early hours, ascending slowly through steep scree toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. After reaching Gilman’s Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. Celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning the descent. Descend back toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut, where you spend the night.

Horombo to Marangu Gate to Moshi
After breakfast, begin the final descent from Horombo Hut. Retrace the trail through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest before reaching Marangu Gate. At the gate, complete the exit procedures and receive your summit certificate. Your vehicle will then transfer you back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
