Safari summary

The seven-day Rongai Route offers a gradual ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro through the quieter northern side of the mountain. Starting near the Kenyan border, the trek passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and high-altitude terrain, with beautiful views of Kibo, Mawenzi, and the Kenyan plains. The extra acclimatization time helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude before the summit attempt. The final climb reaches Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa, followed by a descent through the Marangu Route.

Itinerary

Arrival day

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, our guide will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. Take time to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead. A pre-climb briefing will cover the trekking route, equipment, clothing, backpack preparation, safety, altitude, and other important climbing information.

B&B Hotel

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

The adventure begins with a drive of about 2 hours to Rongai Gate on the northeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration and meeting the climbing crew, start the 8 km trek taking 3–4 hours through the lush rainforest. The trail offers peaceful forest scenery, birdlife, and chances to spot wildlife. A lunch break is taken along the route before continuing to Simba Camp at 2,650 metres. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in camp.

Simba Camp

Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

The trail continues for 5 km, taking 3–4 hours, gradually entering the moorland zone. The open landscape provides beautiful views of Kibo Peak and the eastern ice fields. A lunch break along the route allows time to rest before continuing toward Second Cave Camp at 3,450 metres. Settle into camp, enjoy the mountain scenery, and have dinner before resting for the night.

Second Cave Camp

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

From Second Cave Camp, the 5 km trail takes 3–4 hours through open moorland toward Kikelewa Camp at 3,600 metres. Panoramic views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields remain visible as the landscape becomes more rugged. Lunch is enjoyed along the route before continuing toward the sheltered Kikelewa Valley. The afternoon is ideal for relaxing and enjoying the quiet mountain surroundings.

Kikelewa Camp

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A gradual 5 km ascent taking 4–5 hours leads through the alpine desert toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330 metres. The terrain becomes drier and more rocky, with impressive views of the dramatic Mawenzi Peak. Lunch is served at camp, followed by time to rest and acclimatize to the higher altitude. The evening offers a peaceful setting beneath the peaks before dinner and overnight stay.

Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

The route crosses the wide saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, with the 8 km trek taking 5–6 hours across the rocky alpine desert. Kibo Peak becomes increasingly dominant as you approach Kibo Hut at 4,700 metres. After arriving in the afternoon, have lunch and spend time resting, hydrating, and preparing for the summit climb. An early dinner is served before an early night and the midnight wake-up.

Kibo Hut Camp

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo H

Around midnight, begin the final and most challenging ascent. The 15 km trek takes 12–15 hours, climbing steep scree slopes toward Gilman’s Point and Stella Point. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate the summit achievement and enjoy the spectacular sunrise. Descend to Kibo Hut for lunch and a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut at 3,720 metres through different ecological zones.

Horombo Hut camp

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Mosh

The final 20 km descent takes 5–6 hours, passing through the lush rainforest toward Marangu Gate at 1,860 metres. Enjoy the changing vegetation and forest scenery as you leave the high mountain environment behind. At Marangu Gate, receive your Mount Kilimanjaro summit certificate and say farewell to the climbing crew. A transfer will then take you to your hotel in Moshi, where you can rest and celebrate your achievement.
