Kampala

Bordering the magnificent Lake Victoria, Uganda’s capital city - Kampala - sprawl out over a series of undulating hills and despite the development, this ‘Garden City’ is known for its tree-lined avenues. This bustling city serves as the commercial hub of the country boasting a blend of African markets, modern skyscrapers, international hotels, bars, and casinos. It provides an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding area. Visitors can look forward to learning about the country’s rich and colourful history at the Uganda Museum; enjoying a number of activities on Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake; and visiting the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the nearby Mburo National Park to catch a glimpse of local wildlife including: hippo, zebra, gazelles, crocodiles, warthog, and variety of birdlife.

 

Kampala City Tour

Guests can make the most of their trip to Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, by taking a guided tour to enjoy the rich cultural history and tourist attractions of this beautiful city built across seven famous hills. The tour is conducted by an experienced local tour guide that knows his way around the city along with a comfortable air-conditioned safari vehicle. Visitors will visit popular historic cultural and religious sites that include Kasubi Tombs, Kabaka's Palace, Martyrs Shrine and Uganda National Museum.

Day 2:      Nile Village Hotel & Spa, Jinja

Early in the morning after your breakfast, depart Kampala on a sightseeing trip to Jinja. En-route; see

Jinja

Situated on the northern shores of Africa’s largest lake, in southern Uganda, Jinja is the second largest city in Uganda and is famous for being located at the source of the Nile. The rapids on the Nile make Jinja the white water rafting capital of East Africa. It is also known as the adventure capital of Uganda. While the main attraction is undoubtedly rafting down the Nile, there are also a variety of other adrenaline filled activities such as: quad biking, bungee jumping, kayaking, and mountain biking and horse riding. Other popular activities include: browsing the colourful Jinja market, viewing the faded grandeur of the crumbling colonial architecture lining the streets and joining a bicycle tour to soak up the spectacularly scenic surrounds.

Day 3:      Pakuba Safari Lodge, Murchison Falls National Park   

ROAD TRIP TO MURCHISON FALLS VIA ZIWA RHINO SANCTUARY

Journey time: 6 -7 Hours

Early breakfast & depart Jinja for Murchison Falls National Park.

Stop over for lunch in Masindi and later continue to the park.  You will have the opportunity to walk to the falls before checking in at the lodge for dinner, leisure & overnight.

Rhino Trekking at Ziwa (optional): En-route to Masindi 3 hours’ drive out of Kampala, you will make a stopover at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track rare Rhinos before proceeding to the National Park.

Visit the Top of the falls; spot a permanent rainbow amidst the loud sound of the waterfall. The view is rewarding as it explains why Murchison Falls is one of the world’s powerful waterfalls. And soon after experiencing the perfect scenery, proceed to the ferry dock, crossover to the lodge so as check in with the rest of the day at leisure. 

Murchison Falls National Park

Stretching from the shores of Lake Albert, Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest National Park. The Nile River flows through the middle of the park creating the impressive Murchison Falls which is the park’s major attraction. The landscape features dense rainforest, undulating savannah and a diversity of abundant wildlife. Visitors can enjoy prime game-viewing along the Buligi Circuit. The forests are home to numerous primates, including Chimpanzees, and near the river, buffalo, elephants and Rothschild-Giraffes can be seen. Other commonly spotted wildlife include: lions, antelope, waterbucks, hippos and crocodiles.

Overnight: Pakuba Safari Lodge    

Pakuba Safari Lodge is located in North West of Uganda on the Eastern Bank of the Albert Nile. The tastefully furnished rooms offer comfort, style and serenity. Here you can enjoy a variety of excursions and activities; from exhilarating Safari drives to boat trips along the River Nile, ending at the foot of Murchison Falls. For the more adventurous, one can trek up to the top of the falls and marvel at the views through the mist.

Alternate: Paraa Safari Lodge        

Established in 1954, Paraa Safari Lodge is in Murchison Falls National Park. The lodge is located in the north west of Uganda overlooking one of nature's best kept secrets, the River Nile, on its journey from its source at Lake Victoria to join Lake Albert – here it is suddenly channelled into a gorge only six meters wide, and cascades 43 meters below. The earth literally trembles at Murchison Falls - one of the world's most powerful flows of natural water.

Paraa Safari Lodge offers a unique blend of comfort, relaxation and adventure. Each of the rooms is a haven of style and serenity, complete with balcony and private bathroom.

The safari décor of the lodge still reflects the bygone era of early explorers, enshrined with a modern touch. The luxurious pool overlooks the winding River Nile below, which was the setting for the classic Hollywood movie "The African Queen" (starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart). Enjoy a variety of excursions and activities; from exhilarating Safari drives to boat trips along the River Nile, ending at the foot of Murchison Falls. For the more adventurous, one can trek up to the top of the falls and marvel at the views through the mist. A variety of ecosystems and an impressive 451 species of birds awaits.

Day 4:      Pakuba Safari Lodge, Murchison Falls National Park   

GAME DRIVE & LAUNCH CRUISE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FALLS

After an early breakfast, you will have a game drive through the delta circuit, reputably known for high concentrations of wildlife. Return to the lodge and spend the rest of the morning at leisure with lunch at the lodge.

What to expect;

Lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hyenas, hartebeests, oribi, Uganda Kobs, chimpanzees and patas monkeys.

In the afternoon, you will go for the superb launch cruise on the Nile. In addition to taking you close to the base of the waterfall, the 3-hour launch trip follows a stretch of the Nile with a compelling African atmosphere. Game viewing is excellent with a stunning bird life.

What to expect:

  • Some of the largest Nile crocodiles left in Africa,
  • Small herds of buffalo, waterbuck & kob
  • Elephants
  • The birdlife on the banks is stunning. Birds to be seen include the African fish Eagle, Goliath heron, saddle-billed stork, African Jacana, Pied and malachite kingfishers, African skimmer, Piacpiac, rock prantincole kingfishers, bee-eaters and many more.

You will spend a quiet evening at the lodge with a tasty dinner.

 

Wild Frontiers Murchison Falls Bottom of the Falls Cruise

Wild Frontiers Murchison Falls Bottom of the Falls Cruise is a three-hour scheduled and private cruise from park headquarters to the head of Fajao Gorge at the base of Murchison Falls. Passengers can witness the mighty force of the Nile River pushing through a narrow seven-metre gap, cascading down a forty-metre cliff to the vast gorge below. The power of the falls and the scenic views from their base are breath-taking. Large resident populations of hippo float in the water along the way, groups of crocodile bask on the shore, and herds of elephant, buffalo and antelope can be seen moving along the riverbanks. The river offers spectacular opportunities for bird watchers, with a wide range of water birds and vibrant Bee-eaters nesting in the cliffs along the river's bank.

Day 5:      Primate Lodge Kibale, Kibale Forest National Park      

DEPART MURCHISON FALLS TO KIBALE N. PARK

Journey time: 6 - 7 Hrs

Early in the morning, after your breakfast, you will depart for Kibale National Park with your lunch stopover in Hoima.

Kibale National Park contains one of the most varied tracts of the tropical rain forest in Uganda. Forest cover, interspersed with patches of grassland and swamp, dominates the northern and central parts of the park on an elevated plateau. Upon your arrival you will drive straight to your Lodge and recuperate from the long journey.

Kibale Forest National Park

Located in southern Uganda, Kibale Forest National Park is said to be home to the highest density of primates in Africa. Although the highlight of the park is the habituated chimpanzees, the treetops are alive with all manner of monkey including: red-tailed monkey, L’Hoest's monkey, grey-cheeked Mangabey, red colobus and black and white colobus monkeys are all spotted here. When you’re not searching for monkeys there are over 300 bird species and an incredible 250 species of butterfly to keep you busy. Visitors can look forward to chimpanzee tracking, birding tours and guided nature walks.

 

Overnight: Primate Lodge Kibale  

Primate Lodge in Kibale is an exclusive eco-lodge situated in the heart of Kibale Forest National Park. It is surrounded by a lush tropical forest that is home to 13 different species of primates, including the chimpanzees. Privately secluded in the rainforest, this safari lodge offers you a truly authentic jungle experience and is the perfect gateway for tracking the primates in Uganda. Whether you wish a high level of luxury and comfort, rather stay in a midrange cottage or want to bring your own tent, Primate Lodge Kibale is the ideal place for you. Primate Lodge Kibale was awarded with the Chimp Award 2008 for Investment in Eco-Tourism by UWA.

Alternate: Papaya Lake Lodge       

Papaya Lake Lodge is situated about 350 km away from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, in one of the country’s most scenic regions. The Great Crater Lakes area boasts over 20 extinct volcanic craters, forming a necklace of lakes, each unique in shape, size and colour, and each boasting its own distinct ecosystem.

Papaya Lake Lodge offers nine spacious and bright cottages. They are all situated on the extinct volcano crater’s slope and have breath-taking views of the Lyantonde Lake. Each of the cottages offers complete privacy, hidden from view by a green wall of sympathetic treetops. Eight of the cottages feature two beds (one king-size and one single), local stone-decorated bathrooms with shower units and verandas equipped with deckchairs. The ninth cottage is a two-floor villa boasting three bedrooms, a fireplace-lit living room, a spacious bathroom and a large terrace. Facilities include a restaurant, bar and swimming pool.

Day 6:      Primate Lodge Kibale, Kibale Forest National Park      

Day Itinerary

PRIMATE ADVENTURE IN KIBALE NATIONAL PARK

At 795 sq.km, this is home to over 351 tree species some over 200 years old, famous for 13 primate species including Chimpanzees, 70 mammals & over 375 bird species. In the morning, start of the day with breakfast and get ready for the day’s exciting activities.

First thing, you will go for Chimpanzee tracking combined with an all green forest walk where you will see various bird species (great blue turaco), and more primates like the black and white colobus monkey, you will also view more animals to include bushbucks and mongoose.

Right after this activity, return to your lodge for refreshment and stay at leisure while enjoying your lunch. In the afternoon, pay a visit to Bigodi Community (optional) where you will be interacting freely with the locals. Then proceed to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a nice spot for birds; to include; African hobby, great blue turaco, Black kite, Swamp flycatcher, Scarlet-chested bird, Grey-crowned crane, Herons, Weaver birds and many more. Later on, in the evening, you will return to your lodge and enjoy your evening amidst the most captivating ambiance.
