Day 1 Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National park This morning, you will be met by your guide at your hotel in Kigali for transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park. We pass via Bwindi Impenetrable National Park so as to access Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishasha sector to try our luck on the tree climbing lions. These cats are normally seen lazing in the fig trees in Ishasha so as to escape the mid-day sun and other reasons you will get to know. An afternoon game drive increases the chances of seeing these cats and elephants, buffaloes, topi, and so on. We later drive to our lodge to relax for the night. Meal plan –Breakfast, lunch and supper Accommodation –Pumba Safari Cottages/The Bush Lodge Day 2 Game drives and boat trip We wake up early for a morning game drive to search for the early risers. This is the best time to spot predators such as lions, leopards and the spotted hyena. Our game drive ends at the shores of Lake George giving you a chance to see a typical Ugandan fishing village. We then feed on our packed lunch and drive to the Mweya peninsular so as to have a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel. This is the water stream that joins two lakes George and Edward and is said to have the highest concentration of hippos in the world hence named “Hippo Paradise”. Expect to see animals and birds including elephants, buffaloes, kobs, waterbucks, crocodiles, monitor lizards hippos, African Fishing Eagles, pelicans, cormorants, gulls, marabou stalk and so on. After the boat trip, we have a late evening game drive which leads us to our lodge. Meal plan –Breakfast, lunch and supper. Accommodation –Pumba Safari Cottages/The Bush Lodge Day 3 Chimpanzee tracking and Transfer to FortPortal After breakfast, we prepare ourselves for the once in a life time experience (chimpanzee tracking). You may track the chimps in the Kyambura Gorge or Imaramagambo Forest or Kalinzu Forest; the choice is yours. This activity is a bit challenging but very rewarding, so expect to walk for one to six hours depending on where the chimps will be on this day. Having encountered them, you will have a full hour with them. The chimpanzees’ behavior can provide a clue to that of our early ancestors. We then start our journey to FortPortal as we get ready for the 3 days’ mini trek in the Rwenzoris also known as “Mountains of the moon” Travel time – Approx. 3Hrs Meal Plan – Breakfast, lunch and supper. Accommodation – Rwenzori Guest House/Dutchess Day 4 Ascend the Rwenzori (3 days mini hike) The Rwenzori mini trek will start at the local village of Kazingo 14 Km west of Fort Portal town in Kabarole district. From here you will start your ascent along the unmarked paths meeting many locals along the way. You will see how people in the Rwenzoris live in huts with no electricity and running water. You will also enter the Mountain Rwenzori National park where you will find a number of bird species and primates. Note that this is the third highest mountain in Africa and the only place in the world where it snows at the equator. Very early this morning, you will be transferred from your camping ground to the base of the mountain/Kazingo. At around 08:30, hike into the Rwenzoris to your first campsite. (1500m). The first day shall take us about 6-8 hours before reaching the first camping site near Karangora Peak. Experience the daily life of the Bakonzo people, help with food preparation, and enjoy a local meal. In the evening, you will be able to share and interact with locals and take part in traditional tribal stories including learning some of their history. The trek is through beautiful sceneries which Rwenzori is famous for. Meal plan –Breakfast, lunch and supper Accommodation – Camping in Rwenzoris/Rwenzori Eco Tourism Campsite DAY 5 Ascend the Rwenzori The second phase of the trek shall be aimed at climbing Karangora Peak, an excellent hike from the National Park Boundary, at about 2050m, following the Mpanga River up a beautiful valley; you will also get to see the source of this famous Fort Portal River. (River Mpanga). Continue climbing to the top of the mountain ridge at about (2300m), passing stunning views of the Rift Valley, Lake Albert, and western Uganda. At the summit of Karangora, the highest peak of the Northern Rwenzori Mountains, views west to Bundibugyo and the Congo, south to Kasese, east to Fort Portal, and north to the Semuliki Rift Valley. The2nd day trek shall be through Mountain Rwenzori National park starting from the forestry zone which is famous for different vegetation zones, the three horned chameleon and several types of medicinal plants. You will get to know their uses to the locals. Expect to see many primates and birds. On the second day of the trek, you will climb through the Rwenzori Mountains’ jungles on the other side of the mountains through the Bwamba pass to Bundibugyo. At the end of the forest you shall arrive at your next camping site, along the park boundary to stay another night. The second day trek shall take about 6-8 hours. Meal plan – Breakfast, lunch and supper. This is where the ancient Bantu people in East Africa (Baganda, Basoga, Bakiga, Banyakore, etc.) are said to have migrated from. Enjoy unique bird species and scenic views of the Rift Valley, Semuliki River, and the DR Congo. Your driver will already be this side for your transfer to your camping site/Hotel hence end of the hike.
