Kilimanjaro the roof of Africa

Machame route (also known as the Whiskey Route) is one of the most scenic routes and most popular route now days. This route is more used than other routes, but more strenuous and involves camping at basic campsites throughout the trek. The start of this route involves a gradual climb through rain forest, from 1800 to 3000m. The summit attempt is a long day, involving about 14 hours walking, most of it during the night. After summit, we descend through Stella Point to Barafu hut Camp and then to overnight at Mweka camp.

DAY 1: Meet Eastland Adventures representative at Kilimanjaro international Airport and drive to your hotel in Moshi for rest and later meet your Kilimanjaro guide for briefing. DAY 2: Drive from hotel to Machame Gate, hike to Machame Hut DAY 3: Hike from Machame hut to Shira Cave camp DAY 4: Hike from Shira cave Camp to Lava tower then Baranco Camp DAY 5: Hike from Baranco Camp to Karanga Camp DAY 6: Hike from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp DAY 7: Hike from Barafu Camp to Summit and descend down to Mweka Camp DAY 8: Descend from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and drive to your Hotel in Moshi for long hot shower and beer DAY 9: Drive you Back to Kilimanjaro international airport for departures or join us for Safaris

Day 1 : We will meet and drive you from Kilimanjaro international airport to your hotel in Moshi and rest for a while afterward you will meet your guide for gear checking and briefing about the mountain. Also our guide will go through our group camping gear and demonstrate the use and operation of all equipment especially emergence oxygen cylinder and pulse ox meter and explain signs and symptoms of various mountain sicknesses which might happen while trekking.

Day 2 to Machame hut 3000m: We will drive for 1 hour from your hotel in Moshi to Machame gate for registrations and meet the rest of the team cook and porters ready for the climb. We will climb for 5-6 hours to walk for 11km and we will cross rain forest also during noon we will break for picnic lunch and overnight at Machame hut.

Day 3 to Shira cave camp 3750m: Today will be a short day but rather steep rocky trail and we will have hot lunch at the camp. It will be slow hike with plenty of breaks and enough time to acclimatize. Most of route is rather bare of vegetation providing little shade from sun because we will be in moorland zone, you will cross many ridges and see Shira peak and mount Meru in west side.

Day 4 to Baranco camp 3940m: Today we will keep walking in alpine desert for 10km for 6-8 hours we will start with climbing over boulders and very few rocks, then steady uphill climb to lava tower (150m high volcanic plug that juts out the side of the mountain) and stop for lunch around noon. Some people may start to get a mild headache due to altitude changes, from lava tower we will descend about 2 hours through dust and rock trail to our next overnight at Baranco camp.

Day 5 to Karanga camp 3995m: Today we are still in the Alpine desert and expect to walk for 6km about 4-5 hours start by scrambling up the great Baranco wall for about an hour and half. In this wall some section will be steep forcing you to use hands to reach and maneuver yourself around rock boulders like rock climbing, although its not challenging as rock climbing. At the top of the wall you can see Baranco valley and the campsite you spent a night before also you will walk up and down to the Karanga valley which is the last water point to the mountain and on top of the ridge will be our campsite where we will have hot lunch and overnight at Karanga Campsite.

Day 6 to Barafu hut 4673m: Today will have another walking of 4km for 3-5 hours in steep up hills with a lot of boulders and shattered rock crossing upper alpine desert. We will going through a steep ridge until we reach a rocky section more scrambling for about hour and half. Our next camp will be on large rocky with steep cliff faces and we will have earlier dinner and sleep earlier because we have to wake up in the mid night for the summit.

Day 7 Summit to Uhuru peak (5895m) and descend to Mweka hut: We will wake up around 11:00pm have some tea and snacks dress up warm for the summit. We will start our summit around midnight starting  with steep rocks for about 2 to 3hours and then we will start crossing the zigzag area and keep moving to crater rim and finally Stella point 5756m arround 6am, At Stella point we will meet people from other route like Marangu and Rongai route and joining them heading to Uhuru peak about 1 hour from Stella point. We will be able to see sun rise at Stella point or on our way to Uhuru or at Uhuru peak and then we will stay  for 10-15 minutes for pictures and view and after descend to Barafu campsite for resting brunch and descend down to Mweka camp.

Day 8 to Mweka Gate 1640m: Today after breakfast you will meet your Eastland adventures Kilimanjaro crew for group pictures and Kilimanjaro songs and afterward starting descending down for 3-4 hours to cover the distances of 10km and we will back again to rain forest heading all the way to Mweka gate and you will sing out in National park log book, our guide will collect certificate for those who made successful summit and we will drive to your hotel in Moshi for long shower and Kilimanjaro beer.

Day 9: Drive you back to Kilimanjaro International airport for departures or Join Safaris.
