Safari summary
This 5-day, 4-night private safari from Nairobi is an ideal first Kenya safari. It combines two nights in the world-famous Maasai Mara with one night at Lake Nakuru and one night at Lake Naivasha. The longest drive comes on the first day, and the journeys get shorter after that, ending with an easy two-hour drive back to Nairobi.
In the Maasai Mara, you’ll enjoy an afternoon game drive on arrival and a full day exploring the reserve with a picnic lunch. Lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and hyena are commonly seen, and leopard and cheetah are possible. From July to October, the Great Migration herds fill the plains, and your guide will head towards the Mara River for a chance to see a crossing.
At Lake Nakuru National Park, you’ll search for white and black rhino, Rothschild’s giraffe and buffalo, and take in the views from Baboon Cliff. At Lake Naivasha, a boat trip takes you close to hippos and African fish eagles. Afterwards, you’ll walk among giraffe, zebra and wildebeest on Crescent Island, where there are no big predators.
You travel in a private 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and your own English-speaking driver-guide, so the pace and focus of each day are up to you. Park fees, the Naivasha boat trip and Crescent Island entry are included.
Optional extras include flying to the Mara to save time on Day 1, a sunrise hot-air balloon flight, a Maasai village visit, a cycling safari in Hell’s Gate National Park, an extra night in the Mara, or a beach extension on the Kenyan coast. This safari suits first-time visitors, couples and families.
