Safari summary

This private 4-day safari pairs two very different parks in southern Kenya. You start with two nights in Amboseli, one of Africa’s best places to watch and photograph elephants. Large family herds and big-tusked bulls cross open plains and swamps, and on clear mornings Mount Kilimanjaro rises behind them. Next, you head east through the Chyulu Hills to Tsavo West, a bigger, wilder and quieter park. Here you’ll find black lava flows, the crystal-clear pools of Mzima Springs (where you can watch hippos from an underwater chamber), and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. The route has two Amboseli nights, so it isn’t rushed, and it avoids long backtracking.

Why this route works
Two nights in Amboseli: Kilimanjaro is often clearest at dawn. A second morning doubles your chance of the classic photo of elephants below the mountain. It also gives you a full day to follow the herds between the swamps and the plains.
Tsavo West for contrast: After Amboseli’s open plains, Tsavo West brings hills, lava flows and dense bush, plus far fewer vehicles. You also get the rare experience of watching hippos underwater at Mzima Springs.
A natural line: Amboseli and Tsavo West sit next to each other. The drive between them crosses the Chyulu Hills and the Shetani Lava Flow, so the transfer is part of the safari.
Fewer parks, more time: Many 4-day trips add Tsavo East too, leaving one night in each park. We keep it to two parks so you have time to watch and photograph, not just pass through.

Itinerary

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

Amboseli

Your driver-guide picks you up in Nairobi around 07:00 for the drive south to Amboseli. Arrive at your lodge or camp in the early afternoon for lunch. From about 15:30, set out on your first game drive. In the late afternoon, elephants often walk out of the swamps and across the plains, and if the clouds lift, Mount Kilimanjaro may appear in the evening light. Meals: Lunch and dinner.

Full Day in Amboseli National Park

Amboseli

Head out at sunrise for the clearest views of Kilimanjaro and soft light for photos. Watch elephant families feed and bathe in the swamps, alongside buffalo, hippo, pelicans and herons, then climb Observation Hill for wide views. Rest at camp over midday. In the afternoon, explore the plains and dry lake bed for lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Optional: visit a nearby Maasai community. Meals: Breakfast, lunch (picnic or at camp) and dinner.

Amboseli to Tsavo West

Tsavo

Enjoy a final sunrise game drive in Amboseli, with one more chance to see Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, drive 2.5–3.5 hours to Tsavo West via Kimana and the Chyulu Hills, stopping at the black volcanic rock of the Shetani Lava Flow. At Mzima Springs, see hippos and crocodiles from the underwater chamber or a ranger-led trail. Lunch at your lodge, then search for black rhino at Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary in the late afternoon. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Tsavo West to Nairobi

Tsavo

Set out on an early morning game drive, perhaps to Chaimu Crater or the Roaring Rocks viewpoint, looking for lion, leopard, lesser kudu and klipspringer. After breakfast, exit the park at Mtito Andei and drive about 5–6 hours back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon. Drop-off at your hotel or JKIA. Book international flights for late evening. Meals: Breakfast (lunch on the road, if needed).
