Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut

Trekking Hours: 4-5 hours After breakfast, you will be collected from your hotel in Moshi and taken to the Marangu gate. Once the necessary paper work has been completed, your trek can begin and you will soon be trekking through the dense rainforest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, you will have the chance to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After all your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior.

Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut

Trekking Hours: 8-9 hours The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.

Trekking Hours: 2-3 hours Today is your extra day for acclimatization, a very important part of your program as it allows vital extra time for adapting to the mountain air, which becomes ever thinner as you ascend. Everyone is given the option today to visit the Zebra Rocks (4,100 meters), which involves a 90 – minute trek and a return descent to the Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) for a second night.

Trekking Hours: 5-6 hours Today’s stage is long and tough. The well-built trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This nearly vegetation less plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut that is usually reached in about 5 - 6 hours. Here, you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short.

Summit Day – Uhuru Peak Trekking Time: 12–14 hours Begin the final ascent around midnight, trekking through the darkness toward Gillman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim. After a short rest, continue for another 1–2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, around sunrise. Celebrate your achievement before descending to Kibo Hut for a warm meal and a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate
Trekking Hours: 6–8 hours Descend through the heath and moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700 m) for a warm lunch, then continue through the tropical rainforest to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1,860 m). After saying goodbye to your mountain crew, transfer back to your hotel in Moshi to relax, shower, and celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb.
