The Machame Route, popularly known as the “Whiskey Route,” is famous for its beautiful scenery and diverse landscapes. The trek takes you through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and eventually to the summit area of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This 4-day itinerary is designed for experienced hikers with excellent physical fitness. However, because of the limited acclimatization time, it is a challenging itinerary and does not provide as much acclimatization as the longer 6- or 7-day Machame itineraries.

Itinerary

Machame Gate – Machame Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi and transferred to Machame Gate, where you will complete registration and park formalities. The trek begins through the beautiful tropical rainforest. The trail is surrounded by tall trees, unique vegetation, and a variety of birdlife. You will gradually ascend toward Machame Camp. After reaching the camp, you will have dinner and spend the night in your tent.

Machame Camp – Shira Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, you will continue climbing through the rainforest before entering the heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and more open as you gain altitude. Along the way, you will enjoy impressive views of Mount Meru and the surrounding landscapes, weather permitting. You will continue to Shira Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night. Hiking time: Approximately 4–6 hours Habitat: Heath and moorland Overnight: Shira Camp

Shira Camp – Barranco Camp

After breakfast, you will begin the trek across the spectacular high-altitude landscape toward Barranco Camp. The route passes through the alpine desert zone, with impressive views of Lava Tower and the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. This day is important for acclimatization as you climb to a higher elevation before descending toward Barranco Camp. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the following day's summit attempt.

Barranco Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka

The climb starts with the challenging ascent of the Barranco Wall, followed by a trek toward Karanga and then Barafu Camp, depending on the route and itinerary logistics. From the summit approach, you will continue toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet). After reaching the summit, you will have time to take photographs and enjoy the incredible views before beginning your descent. You will descend toward Mweka Camp
