Itinerary
Moshi Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Kilimanjaro
Rising (ft): 3,000m: 56,000ft / 1,830m to 10,200ft / 3,100m | Stretch: 11 km | Hiking time: 5–7 hours | Climatic habitat: Rain Forest. After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Machame Gate for registration and trek preparations. Enter the lush rainforest and follow a steadily rising path beneath tall vegetation. The forest atmosphere provides a beautiful introduction to the mountain. Continue at a controlled pace until Machame Camp, where dinner and overnight rest await.
Machame Camp
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Kilimanjaro
Rising (ft): 10,200ft / 3,100m to 12,600ft / 3,840m | Stretch: 9 km | Hiking time: 4–6 hours | Climatic habitat: Moorland. Today's trail leaves the dense rainforest and enters the open moorland zone. Continue upward toward the Shira Plateau while enjoying increasingly wide views of the surrounding landscape. The terrain becomes drier and more exposed as you gain altitude. Walk slowly, and follow your guide's pace recommendations. Reach Shira Camp and settle in for the evening.
Shira Camp
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro
Hiking time: 5–7 hours walking | Rising: 12,600ft / 3,840m to 12,700ft / 3,860m | Stretch: 15 km | Climatic habitat: Semi-desert. Leave Shira Camp and cross high-altitude semi-desert terrain toward Barranco. The route gains significant elevation before descending toward camp, supporting the principle of climbing high and sleeping lower. Views of the upper mountain become more impressive along the way. Take frequent hydration breaks and maintain a comfortable walking rhythm.
Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro
Rise (ft): Barranco Camp 3,900m to Karanga Camp 3,995m | Stretch: 6 km | Hiking time: 3.5–4 hours | Climatic habitat: Moorland. Begin with the well-known Barranco Wall section, following your guide's instructions through the steeper terrain. Once beyond the wall, continue across high-altitude valleys and rocky slopes toward Karanga Camp. This shorter hiking day offers useful time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit stages ahead.
Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro
Rise (ft): Karanga Camp 3,995m to Barafu Camp 4,673m | Stretch: 4 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Climatic habitat: Alpine Desert. Continue toward Barafu Camp through increasingly barren alpine desert terrain. The short distance does not mean the day should be rushed because altitude makes every climb more demanding. Arrive at Barafu, organize your summit clothing and rest as much as possible. Your guide will explain the summit schedule and safety procedures before the final ascent
Barafu Camp
Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Kilimanjaro
Rising (ft): 4,700m / 15,350ft to 5,895m / 19,343ft down to 3,090m / 10,150ft | Stretch: 6 km up / 13 km down | Hiking time: 5–7 hours up / 5–6 hours down | Climatic habitat: Arctic. Begin the summit attempt in the early morning when temperatures are at their lowest. Move slowly with your guide toward Uhuru Peak, taking controlled steps and regular breaks. After reaching the summit, begin the long descent toward Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp
Mweka Camp to Machame Gate to Moshi
Kilimanjaro
Descend (ft): 3,090m / 10,150ft to 1,680m / 5,500ft | Stretch: 10 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Climatic habitat: Rain Forest. Complete your final descent through the rainforest toward Machame Gate. Enjoy the changing vegetation as you return to lower elevation. After reaching the gate, complete the necessary procedures before meeting your transfer vehicle. Continue to Moshi Town, check into your hotel, and take time to relax after completing your seven-day Kilimanjaro adventure.
