Safari summary
This 5-day February Tanzania private family safari is designed for parents and children who want to experience the Serengeti calving season without following a rushed group-tour schedule. The journey combines a Big Five game drive inside Ngorongoro Crater with three wildlife-focused days across the Ndutu plains.
During February, seasonal rainfall produces fresh grass across Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti ecosystem. Large herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles gather on these plains to feed and give birth. Families may observe newborn calves, large migration herds and predators such as lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and jackals. Wildlife movements and births remain natural and cannot be guaranteed.
Your family travels in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser operated by KiliPori Safaris. The vehicle includes a photographic roof, window seating, charging points, a refrigerator and drinking water. Child seats can be arranged when requested before arrival.
Unlike a shared safari, this private Tanzania family safari allows your driver-guide to adjust departure times, game-drive duration, picnic stops and rest breaks according to your children’s ages and energy levels. The guide explains wildlife behaviour in clear, engaging language and helps younger travellers identify animal tracks, birds and different species.
The itinerary includes Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Ndutu, Lake Masek, Big Marsh and the surrounding short-grass plains. Three nights in Ndutu reduce repeated transfers and provide more opportunities to locate the Great Migration as the herds move through different parts of the calving area.
Accommodation is provided at Ngorongoro Farm House and Ndutu Heritage Camp. Family rooms or family tents will be requested according to the number and ages of the children. Both properties provide en-suite accommodation and full-board meals. Comparable family-friendly accommodation may be offered if the named property is unavailable.
This February Serengeti calving season safari is suitable for families travelling with children, teenagers or several generations. KiliPori Safaris can customise the package with extra nights, an internal flight, private picnic arrangements, dietary requirements or a Zanzibar family beach extension.

Ngorongoro Farm House
Travel to the Ndutu Plains
Leave Karatu after breakfast and travel 190 km through the Ngorongoro highlands to Ndutu. The changing landscape and wildlife sightings make the journey interesting for children. Begin your first Serengeti calving season game drive around Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek, searching for wildebeest, zebras, newborn calves, giraffes, cheetahs and lions before continuing to your family tented camp.
Ndutu Heritage Camp
Family Calving Season Safari
Spend a full day following Great Migration herds across the short-grass plains. Your private guide selects productive game-viewing areas using recent sightings while allowing comfortable breaks for children. Observe wildebeest calves, zebras, gazelles and predators such as cheetahs, lions and spotted hyenas. Enjoy a family picnic in the safari area and continue wildlife viewing during the afternoon.
Ndutu Heritage Camp
Ndutu Wildlife and Predators
Begin early when animals are often active and temperatures are cooler. Explore Big Marsh, woodland and open plains according to current herd movements. Children can learn how guides identify tracks, animal calls and predator behaviour. Look for elephants, giraffes, wildebeest calves, zebras, cheetahs and lion prides. Return to camp for lunch or carry a picnic, depending on your family’s preferred schedule.
Ndutu Heritage Camp
Final Safari and Return to Arusha
Take a final morning game drive across the Ndutu plains and search for wildlife your family may not have seen on previous days. After breakfast, travel 280 km through the Ngorongoro highlands, Karatu and Great Rift Valley countryside. Rest stops can be arranged during the journey. Arrive in Arusha during the late afternoon for transfer to your hotel or assistance with your onward travel.
