Safari summary
No need to put the safari dream aside if you cannot or prefer not to take anti-malaria pills. South Africa affords phenomenal "Big Five" safari in malaria-free zones such as the Madikwe Game Reserve.
Begin your trip in Cape Town, sophisticated modern city of great natural beauty. Take the cable car up Table Mountain and out to Cape Point and Foxy Beach to see the African penguins.
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is home to 5-star restaurants. Downtown, the Zeitz MOCCA museum is a not-to-miss site. Formally a gigantic grain silo, it now houses the world’s largest collection of contemporary African art. Nearby, the narrow, cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap are lined with colorful houses, art galleries, and cafes.
The food and wine are now considered world-class, including some of the finest vineyards in the world. The food scene runs the gamut from tasting menus to South African braai (bbq) and fresh fish brought in daily.
One cannot visit Cape Town without thinking about the turbulent apartheid era. District Six displays the most difficult of times, as does Robben Island, site of the former maximum-security prison where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were held during apartheid and is now a museum.
Other interesting sites include the Jewish Museum, housed in one of the oldest synagogues in South Africa and now preserved as a museum. A visit to the South African Astronomical Observatory will show you the skies of the southern hemisphere that are very different than what is seen in North America. For arts - Greenmarket Square, the Outdoor Woodstock Street Market, and last but not least, the Diamond Museum.
SAFARI - On to your five-day safari adventure and the malaria-free Madikwe National Park, which lies on the border of Botswana. It is a short two-hour flight from Cape Town and one hour from Johannesburg.
Madikwe is owned and managed by the Northwest Parks Board, a state-owned conservation area and operates lodges as a joint venture with private lodge owners. It is home to all of the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo). Over 10,000 animals of 27 major species have been recorded over the past seven years.
Lodges vary from simple to extraordinary luxury. There are family-oriented properties as well as those dedicated to all adult experiences. Madikwe Game Reserve is our top choice for the most authentic malaria-free safari experience.

Itinerary
Day 01 - Cape Town
Touch down in Cape Town, South Africa! Once through customs and immigration, you'll receive a warm welcome from your Born Free Safaris VIP host. Most international flights arrive in the evening, so you may want to get some rest after you are escorted directly to your hotel and assisted with check-in. Ask your host or hotel concierge if you are interested in dining recommendations.
Day 02 - Table Bay & City Tour
After breakfast in the hotel, you're off on your introductory tour of the Cape region with your guide. Head to the top of Table Mountain on a slowly rotating cable car. Here you can see unsurpassed views of both sides of the city. Continue on to the Cape Malay/Bo Kaap arts district. Next, it's off with your guide to City Hall, Greenmarket Square, and the House of Parliament.
Day 03 - Cape Peninsula
Spend a full day touring and discovering the Cape Point region. Stop at Foxy and Boulder Beach, home of the African Jackass Penguins. After witnessing the adorable penguins in their coastal habitat, journey on through the scenic fishing villages and spectacular Hout Bay. Lunch is included today at one of the fresh seaside restaurants. Then visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with many of the endemic flora and fauna, such as the striking Proteas and Fynbos.
Day 04
Cape Town - personalized touring!
Day 05 - On Safari
Madikwe
Your safari begins today! Board an early flight to Madikwe, where you are met by the camp vehicle and escorted to your lodge. As you make your way to the lodge, watch out for wildlife enroute. Most suggested properties have a waterhole in front of camp--elephant can sometimes be seen drinking in the lagoons or even the camp swimming pool! Game activities focus on game drives and walking safaris.
Day 06
Madikwe
Wake up early to the sounds of the wildlife then grab your camera, and you are off for this morning's game drive. Mornings are generally the best time to see the bush in action. Your driver will look for your favorite species--perhaps a lioness and her cubs or the long-necked giraffe. Return midday to the lodge for lunch, a swim, or a lecture on how the wildlife is tracked. Then embark on a late afternoon game drive.
Day 07
Madikwe
Transverse the park to your second safari location. The second lodge will be a contrast to the first with its own unique look. Embark on game drives in your open safari vehicles. This region is one of the finest in Africa to see the rare wild dogs. As you explore with the professional guides, learn about the flora and fauna, as well as basic bushlore.
Day 08
Madikwe
Daily game drives, with informed professional game rangers, are exciting and always varied. Each day will shed light on the daily lives of elephants, lions, cheetah and their challenges in the bush. During your stay, activities may include game drives, walks, and night game viewing to see the nocturnal species that make Madikwe their home.
Day 09
Madikwe
This morning, why not opt to take an early morning nature walk in search of the smaller creatures of the bush or in hopes of viewing the fabulous bird life at close range. An afternoon game drive takes you in search of that one species that may have eluded you. The professional safari guides will do the utmost to please. Tonight, have a farewell dinner in camp.
Day 10 - Your Journey Onwards
Bid farewell to the Africa bush as you fly to Johannesburg for your flight home, taking with you the memories of an unforgettable African experience.
