Safari summary
Tanzania is scenically magnificent with ever-changing landscapes. In spacious safari vehicles, travel the short distances from Arusha to mystical Tarangire, up the Great Rift Valley wall to Lake Manyara, and through the lush highlands of Ngorongoro Crater.
To maximize your time and comfort, we have designed this itinerary to minimize long-distance road travel between destinations. No transit drive is over 2 hours. While game drives within the parks naturally involve rugged terrain (important for those with back sensitivities), your "home base" will always be a sanctuary of high-comfort, African-chic design.
To reach the most remote corners of the Serengeti, you will take to the skies for a seamless transition into the heart of the wilderness. This combination of traditional game drives and aerial viewing promises to provide extraordinary wildlife sightings, where a single glance can reveal massive herds of buffalo and zebra alongside elephant, lion, and giraffe for a truly unforgettable safari.
Key areas for maximizing game viewing:
December-March: Southern Serengeti/Ndutu (Calving season, less crowded)
Late May-July: Western Corridor/Grumeti section of the Serengeti
July-September: Excellent resident wildlife especially in Tarangire National Park
October-December: Northern & Western Serengeti herds return from the Mara

Itinerary
Day 01 - Arusha, Tanzania
A warm welcome awaits upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your Born Free Safaris local host will escort you to your hotel. Relax and unwind tonight in the beautiful surroundings of your outstanding lodge. Your exciting safari adventure begins tomorrow!
Day 02
Tarangire
This morning, board your flight to Tarangire National Park. Greeted by your guide, board your safari vehicle, and head off on safari. The landscape reveals its iconic, mystical baobab trees and sausage trees. Giraffe roam on the open roads, and the Maasai can be seen going to market. After lunch, head out again to explore Tarangire’s diverse ecosystems, where you may spot cheetah, sprawling herds of various antelope, and possibly the rare leopard.
Day 03
Tarangire
Head out at dawn. This is the best time to see the wildlife in action. The plains are alive, the air is golden, and the sounds of Africa are all around you. Listen for the roars of lion and keep your eyes peeled for leopard or even the occasional wild dog dashing through the grasslands. Giraffe noses pop out over the treetops, lesser kudu stand on the lookout to keep the herd safe, leopard stalk the riverine...and your excitement builds, not knowing what is around the next termite mound!
Day 04
Lake Manyara
Today it's off on a short and scenic drive towards the Great Rift Valley Wall and Lake Manyara National Park. See the park's forested area on the Treetop Walkway. Keep a look out for a few tree-climbing lions, which may be seen sleeping off the heat on a nearby branch. Stop at a small Maasai village where you'll hear about Maasai traditions and see their homes and public areas. Spend the night at Ngorongoro Crater rim.
Day 05
Ngorongoro Crater
Rise early for breakfast and head out for a drive that descends 2,000 ft into the Ngorongoro Crater for prime-time game viewing in this designated UNESCO Heritage Site. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and often described as the “eighth wonder of the world.” The great caldera encompasses a high concentration of predators, along with zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, buffalo, warthog, and elephant.
Day 06
Serengeti
A scenic flight transports you directly into the heart of the Serengeti, plunging you immediately into one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife spectacles on Earth. This is the stage for the Great Migration, where over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move in an endless, dramatic, and ever-shifting loop in search of fresh, green grasses. Time in the Serengeti may be split into two areas depending on the time of year you travel.
Day 07
Serengeti
Up early with hot tea or coffee and then out on the Serengeti Plains to observe the wildlife as it starts it daily journey looking for food and water. This is the time of day that the game is most active. It is prime time for the maximum experience. Lunch at the lodge or, if you prefer, a picnic lunch can be packed. But midday is a good time for you to relax from the early morning drive. Then head out again late afternoon for "sundowners" as the sun sets.
Day 08
Serengeti
With your guide, head deeper into the vast Serengeti, hoping to get closer to the heart of the herds and to the predators. The scale of life here is staggering - a single sweep of your binoculars can reveal hundreds of elephant, prides of lion, cheetah, and giraffe. While the animals follow an ancient daily rhythm, your experience will be anything but predictable. Each sunrise brings a fresh, unscripted drama to your safari experience.
Day 09
Serengeti
This is nature in its finest form, with the massive herds driving a migratory pattern from the short-grass southern plains, following the scent of rain, and moving northward, pursued constantly by Africa’s most iconic predators—lions, cheetahs, and hyenas lurking in the shadows.
Day 10 - Your Journey Onwards
As your final morning on safari in northern Tanzania concludes, the time has come to bid a heartfelt farewell to the African bush. These experiences will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression, as you board your flight to Arusha. Your host will meet you on arrival where you will have lunch, perhaps do last-minute shopping, and then board your onward flight.
