A Tanzanian safari is more than just a vacation; it is a rare opportunity to gather the generations in a place where the modern world fades away. From the vast plains of the Serengeti to the ancient walls of the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania offers a shared sense of wonder that resonates with everyone from youngsters to grandparents.
In a world dominated by digital distractions, Tanzania provides a powerful "unplugged" education. It is a place where the rhythm of life is dictated by nature, pulling children and teens away from screens and into a living classroom where the circle of life unfolds before their eyes.
Born Free does not just show you the sights, we curate a journey that enriches the soul. While wildlife viewing is the primary focus, we balance every itinerary with meaningful exchanges and activities tailored to your family's interests and age range, from a school visit to a soccer game.
Tanzania Defines Family Adventure:
• Cultural Eye-Opener: Beyond the wildlife, the heart of Tanzania lies in its people. Interacting with local communities offers a humbling perspective on global citizenship that stays with a family forever.
• The Born Free guides are the backbone of the safari. Carefully selected for their ability to engage multi-generational groups, they serve as tracker, Swahili teacher, storyteller, and social director. They ensure your safety while tailoring each day to your children's curiosity.
• Conservation lectures
• Beading with local artisans
• Track identification, bush lore, and spear throwing
• Stop at a school and join an impromptu soccer game
• Visit the cradle of humankind at Olduvai Gorge and Museum
• Hike with the Maasai
• Exchange stories of the bush around the campfire
At Born Free Safaris, we are dedicated to showing you the Tanzania we love, a land of breathtaking beauty that will leave your family with a lifetime of shared stories.

Itinerary
Day 01 - Arusha
"Jambo" ("Hello" in Swahili) Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the gateway to your safari adventure. Most flights arrive in the evening, so you will be escorted by our local Born Free host to your hotel in Arusha. Get some rest tonight - your adventure begins in the morning!
Day 02 - On Safari
Tarangire
Your private safari guide will greet you at the hotel after breakfast. Your first safari destination is Tarangire National Park. It's an easy and scenic drive from Arusha to Tarangire, passing by small villages and lush countryside. Tarangire is all that symbolizes classic Africa. Acacia trees, ancient baobabs, and sausage trees spot the landscape. Elephants can number in the hundreds, as well as large herds of Cape buffalo, all making their way to the river.
Day 03
Tarangire
Game drives are at dawn, but not before you are greeted with hot tea or coffee. Set out in search of your favorite species. Return to the lodge for a fresh, hot breakfast. Midday, you may want to take a walk with a Maasai guide to learn about the flora and fauna of Tarangire. Then head out on a late afternoon game drive that may extend into the evening. Sit down to dinner and reminisce about your day in the bush before heading off to bed.
Day 04
Lake Manyara
Grab your camera and venture out into Lake Manyara, the park that Ernest Hemingway referred to as “the loveliest place I have seen in Africa.” Elephant, giraffe, monkey, impala, and more than 380 species of bird can also be found among the park’s five different vegetation zones. In addition, the park is known for its tree-climbing lions, which may be seen sleeping off the heat of the day on a nearby branch. Continue to the Ngorongoro Highlands for overnight.
Day 05
Ngorongoro Crater
Rise early and head down into Ngorongoro Crater for prime-time game viewing. The area is inhabited by an impressive variety of wildlife, including lions with black manes, the highly endangered black rhino, herds of wildebeest, zebra, elephant, hippo, and hyena. This is also another area that is known for large flocks of flamingo. Picnic lunch in Ngorongoro and then spend a few more hours exploring the Crater.
Day 06 - Olduvai Gorge
Ngorongoro Crater
Head out this morning to the legendary Olduvai Gorge. Known as the "Cradle of Humankind," it is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world. The Leakeys located the remains of Homo habilis, probably the first early human species. Stop at local Maasai village and then head into the Serengeti to your base camp. The location will be determined to maximize the game viewing during the time of year you will be traveling.
Day 07
Serengeti
The focus in the Serengeti will be finding your favorite species and following the herds. Game viewing will be at your pace. Each day you can go out on full-day game drives with a picnic lunch, or morning and afternoon drives - the choice is yours. Your guide will make his recommendations based on the location of the herds' movements.
Day 08
Serengeti
This morning offers a prime opportunity for an optional hot-air balloon safari. Float silently over the vast plains, ideally catching a herd as they trek toward greener pastures. Please note that for safety reasons, there are height and age restrictions. After the flight, set down for a Bush Breakfast. Return to camp via a game drive looking for species not yet seen.
Day 09
Serengeti
For little ones that cannot take the balloon or do not want to, they can stay behind under the watchful eye of camp staff and attend one the children's programs. Here they can learn about bush lore, spear throwing, how you use prints to track the wildlife, or even do traditional beading.
Day 10 - Your Journey Onwards
Bid a fond farewell to the Africa bush with promises of returning. Africa truly gets not only into your heart but your soul. Fly back to Arusha, where a guide and vehicle will be available for the afternoon. Do some last-minute shopping, have lunch, and then begin your journey onward. Your family will take with them the forever-treasured memories of an incredible African experience! "Kwaheri" ("Good-Bye")
