Safari summary
This is a good climbing route for Kilimanjaro with beautiful panoramic landscapes. Throughout the trek, your Kilimanjaro Unforgettable guides will share facts and stories about Tanzania’s nature and wildlife, you will experience great evenings at the overnight camps and witness unforgettable African sunsets.
Climbing Lemosho begins with an altitude of 3,400 meters (11483 feet) above sea level on the western slope of Kilimanjaro. You will pass through five climatic zones of Kilimanjaro, including equatorial, rainforest, and arctic. It’s like hiking from the hot equator to snowy Antarctica in just a week!
Kilimanjaro Unforgettable recommends the seven-day Lemosho route for both beginners and experienced mountain hikers. The ascent is quite simple in technical terms, you don’t need any special equipment or climbing skills to reach the summit. According to our statistics, 98 out of 100 people successfully reach the summit along the eight-day Lemosho route, making it the most successful route of all! This is one of our favorite routes, and it is along Lemosho that we led the legendary Wings of Kilimanjaro expeditions.

Itinerary
Londorossi gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Kilimanjaro
In the morning, your guide and mountain crew will meet you at the hotel for a short briefing before heading out on a 3–4 hour drive to Kilimanjaro’s western gate, Londorossi. Once permits are sorted, you’ll begin your trek through the lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Expect rain, so have your gear ready. After lunch, a short acclimatization hike helps your body adjust. These hikes are key to staying healthy and reaching the summit safely.
Mti Mkubwa Camp
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Kilimanjaro
After a good breakfast, you’ll hit the trail and climb steadily to around 3,500 meters, where the views open up to reveal the Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano-your first real glimpse of Kilimanjaro’s high peaks. The hike to Shira 1 Camp takes about 5–6 hours and is a smooth, manageable stretch that helps your body start adjusting to the altitude. Once at camp, enjoy a warm meal and some well-earned rest or explore the area.
Shira 1 Camp
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Kilimanjaro
Today’s trek from Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp is a gentle climb through stunning high-altitude terrain, offering wide-open views of Kilimanjaro’s unique flora and the distant African plains. Weather permitting, Mount Meru rises on the horizon. Along the way, you can choose to hike up Cathedral Peak-a favorite spot for its epic valley views. It’s an easy detour with a big reward, and we highly recommend giving it a go.
Shira 2 Camp
shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), you’ll head toward one of the most important parts of the trek-Lava Tower (4,600m). Expect a mix of ups and downs along the way, and while some stretches can be tough, spending time here helps your body adjust to the altitude. You'll have lunch at the tower before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m), where the towering Barranco Wall awaits-steep but easier than it looks.
Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro
Start your day early with a hearty breakfast before tackling the Barranco Wall. We recommend leaving camp as early as possible to avoid the crowds. The wall itself is a short but rewarding climb, taking about an hour, with a chance to snap some great photos of the Kibo volcano. Then, continue to Karanga Camp, where the route has a few ups and downs. After a warm lunch, you'll take a short acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp before returning to Karanga to rest.
Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro
In the morning, after a warm and hearty breakfast, you will begin your hike to Barafu Summit Camp. This camp is the starting point for the final night summit to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m /19,336 f) – your end goal. Our team will set up camp ahead of time, so when you arrive your tents and sleeping bags will already be prepared, meaning you can just relax and rest when you reach Barafu Summit Camp. It is better to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping before the night summit.
Barafu Camp
Uhuru Peak- Millennium Camp
Kilimanjaro
Your group will start the final climb from Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,327 ft) at night, heading for Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point (5,895 m / 19,336 ft). Though the climb is straightforward, the altitude makes every step feel tougher. To keep you safe, each pair of climbers will have a personal guide. At the summit, take in the views and visit a nearby glacier before descending to Millennium Camp. Remember, most accidents happen on the way down-take extra care!
Millennium Camp
Millennium Camp-Mweka Gate-Hotel
Kilimanjaro
The Millennium Camp, nestled in a tropical rainforest, offers a peaceful morning after reaching the summit. You’ll feel the relief of lower altitude and the joy of your achievement. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll begin your descent to Mweka Gate (1,640m/5,379ft). Once at the gate, your group will celebrate together, and you’ll have the chance to share your climb experience in the guestbook. Finally, you’ll receive your commemorative certificate and a transfer back to your hotel.
