Safari summary
This is a good climbing route for Kilimanjaro with beautiful panoramic landscapes. Throughout the trek, your Kilimanjaro Unforgettable guides will share facts and stories about Tanzania’s nature and wildlife, you will experience great evenings at the overnight camps and witness unforgettable African sunsets.
Climbing Lemosho begins with an altitude of 3,400 meters (11483 feet) above sea level on the western slope of Kilimanjaro. You will pass through five climatic zones of Kilimanjaro, including equatorial, rainforest, and arctic. It’s like hiking from the hot equator to snowy Antarctica in just a week!
Kilimanjaro Unforgettable recommends the seven-day Lemosho route for both beginners and experienced mountain hikers. The ascent is quite simple in technical terms, you don’t need any special equipment or climbing skills to reach the summit. According to our statistics, 98 out of 100 people successfully reach the summit along the seven-day Lemosho route, making it the most successful route of all! This is one of our favorite routes, and it is along Lemosho that we led the legendary Wings of Kilimanjaro expeditions.

Itinerary
Londorossi gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Kilimanjaro
In the morning, your guide and crew will meet you at the hotel for a briefing before setting off on a 3-4 hour drive to Londorossi Gate (2,250 m), the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing registration and permits, you’ll begin your trek to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m), passing through lush rainforest-don't forget your raincoat! At camp, enjoy a hot lunch, then take a short acclimatization hike to Shira 1 Camp before a warm dinner to rest for tomorrow’s adventure.
Mti Mkubwa Camp
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, we continue as the trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. After several streams are crossed, we continue over the Shira Ridge past the Shira 1 camp and on to the Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. When you reach the camp, your team of specialists will cook lunch and you will have the chance to rest in your tent or walk around the nearby area.
Shira 2 Camp
shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, you'll hike toward the dramatic Lava Tower at 4,600 meters-a key part of the route. Expect a mix of ups and downs, and while the altitude can be challenging, spending time here helps your body adjust. You’ll stop for lunch with incredible views, then descend to Barranco Camp. Here, the towering Barranco Wall awaits. It looks steep, but the path up is surprisingly manageable and even fun.
Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro
Start your day early with a hearty breakfast before tackling the Barranco Wall. Heading out early helps you beat the crowds and enjoy the peaceful climb-it's not too tough and usually takes about an hour. After snapping some photos with Kibo in the background, you'll continue on a more challenging trail to Karanga Camp, full of ups and downs. A warm lunch and a short acclimatization hike wrap up this rewarding day.
Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro
In the morning, after a warm and hearty breakfast, you will begin your hike to Barafu Summit Camp. This camp is the starting point for the final night summit to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m /19,336 f) – your end goal. Our team will set up camp ahead of time, so when you arrive your tents and sleeping bags will already be prepared, meaning you can just relax and rest when you reach Barafu Summit Camp. It is better to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping before the night summit.
Barafu Camp
Summit Uhuru Peak-Millennium Camp
Kilimanjaro
Your summit push begins at night from Barafu Camp, heading for Uhuru Peak-the highest point in Africa. Though the trail isn’t technical, the altitude makes every step feel heavier. That’s why each pair of climbers is supported by a personal guide for safety and encouragement. After reaching the top, you may visit a nearby glacier before heading back to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Millennium Camp. Stay alert-most injuries happen on the descent.
Millennium Camp
Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate-Hotel
Kilimanjaro
Waking up at Millennium Camp, surrounded by lush rainforest, you’ll finally feel the comfort of lower altitude and the pride of reaching the summit. After a warm breakfast, you’ll hike down to Mweka Gate, where your team will be waiting to celebrate your success. You'll have a chance to reflect, leave a note in the guestbook, and receive your well-earned summit certificate before heading back to your hotel.
