Safari summary
The Rongai Route is the only path up Kilimanjaro from the north and offers a quieter, more remote climb. It’s the second easiest route after Marangu, making it great for those looking for a more peaceful and less crowded experience. With fewer trekkers, great scenery, and a drier climate, it’s ideal for a 6-day climb. The trail features unique caves and eventually joins the Marangu Route near the summit.

Itinerary
Rongai Gate - Simba Camp
Kilimanjaro
After a scenic drive to the charming village of Nale Moru, with a quick stop for permits in Marangu, your adventure kicks off on a wide trail passing maize and potato fields. You’ll hike through peaceful pine forest, home to hidden wildlife, as the path gradually climbs. As the trees thin out, you’ll reach your first campsite on the edge of the moorlands, where sweeping views of the Kenyan plains await.
Simba Camp
Simba camp - Kikelewa Camp
Kilimanjaro
After an early breakfast, you’ll begin your trek through the scenic moorlands, with wide-open views unfolding as you climb. The trail gets steeper heading toward Kikelewa Camp, but the reward is worth it-sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s eastern ice fields and the vast landscapes below. A warm meal and peaceful rest await at camp, the perfect end to a day full of challenge, beauty, and quiet triumph.
Kikelewa Camp
Kikelewa Camp - Mawenzi Tarn Hut
Kilimanjaro
A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb views. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.
Mawenzi Tarn Hut
Mawenzi Tarn Hut - Kibo Hut
Kilimanjaro
Cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent very early.
Kibo Hut
Kibo Hut - Summit - Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro
Wake up before dawn for the toughest yet most rewarding part of your trek-reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro. With headlamps lighting the path, you’ll tackle steep slopes to Gilman’s Point, then push on to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. It’s cold and challenging, but every step is worth it for the epic views and that proud summit photo. After, descend to Kibo for lunch and continue down to Horombo to rest.
Horombo Hut
Horombo – Marangu Gate-Hotel
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). Kilimanjaro Unforgettable vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour).
Panama Gardern Resort
