The Blue Starling Excursion is our safari which is fully dedicated to birding in the Pearl of Uganda. If you are a keen bird watcher and love ornithology, this trip is made for you! On this safari we are going to take you to all the national parks of central and western Uganda. We are including Kibale, Semuliki, the Rwenzories, Queen Elizabeth national Park, Mgahinga National Park and Lake Mburo during our trip. Uganda has a count of more than 1,000 endemic bird species, come with us and explore them!

Day 1: After your arrival at Entebbe Airport, we will transfer to our lodge in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, with our safari Land Rover Defender. Your birding trip starts with seeing birds in the suburbs of the city, such as the Marabou storks, which freely move between the road lanes. During our entire safari, there will be one guide assigned to assist your group with birding only, so that you can get the most out of your trip!

Day 2: On the second day, we will tansfer to Mabamba Swamp to see a large collection of bird species, including the interesting shoebills. Later that day, we will connect to Kibale National Park which is located in western Uganda, roughly three hours from Kampala. We will spend a night at one of the gorgeous lodges around.

Day 3: After a comfortable night in one of the top level lodges around and a healthy breakfast, bird watching in the rain forests of Kibale National Park and Bigodi swamp with our experienced bird guide and local residents is our main activity on day three. Another night will be spent bordering the forests. On many evenings different monkey species can be seen playing in the dense bushes and treetops.

Day 4: On day four, we travel to Semliki Wildlife Reserve and Ituuri forest. In the morning, we will concentrate on watching birds in this area. In the afternoon, we will get the chance to visit the famous hot springs! A night will be spent at Semliki Wildlife Reserve after a beautiful sundown.

Day 5: After a session of bird watching in the morning hours, we will travel to the “Mountains of the Moon”, Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The Rwenzoris are the highest mountain range of Uganda and the second highest in Africa, having peaks as high as 5,109m. On our day in the national park, we move at a height of around 2100 meters in order to see some of the birds of this area. We will spend a night there to relax after observing some of the many bird species in the Rwenzoris.

Day 6: On this day, again, we will enjoy to look for alpine bird species of the area’s mountainous highlands. Some of them can be seen in the below checklist. After the whole day experience, we return to our hotel.

Day 7: We will travel south to reach Queen Elizabeth National Park. Besides some spectacular bird views, the national park is famous for its numerous land animals, as well. Elephants, leopards, buffalos, lions, Uganda kobs, and hyenas are just a few of them. In the afternoon of day seven, we will go for bird watching around the Mweya sector of the park. At night, you can opt in for a night game walk which will introduce us to the animals active at night and is led by an experienced UWA guide.

Day 8: Being in Queen Elizabeth National Park, we will get the chance to enjoy a whole day excursion for watching the endemic aquatic birds, a boat cruise in the afternoon along Kazinga channel will complete our day’s activities.

Day 9: On our way down south towards Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home of the rare mountain gorillas, we will be able to do birding directly from our vehicle. We will travel along the route of Ishasha and reach the town of Buhoma, directly bordering the rain forest.

Day 10: Here, We will take our time to spend a whole day for watching forest bird species. Another night will be spent in Buhoma with the rain forest right in front of our camp.

Day 11: In the morning, We will start Our journey to Bwindi’s southern sector of Nshongi and Rushaga headquarters. On the way, we will stay close to the rain forest, enabling you to see more of the special bird species of the park on the way passing Ruhija.

Day 12: After having reached and stayed near Nshongi, we will take our chance and take a guided birding tour inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The night will be spent at Our hotel close to the forest’s border. Alternatively, one may choose to embark on a mountain gorilla trek on that day, visiting the endangered apes in their natural habitat deep inside the forest.

Day 13: After a relaxing night, we will take off to reach Mgahinga National Park, which is located at the tri-country border of Uganda, Rwanda, and the DR Congo. Mgahinga National Park is part of the Virunga Massif, which is made up by numerous volcanoes with some of them active at present! An example is Mt. Nyiragongo near the Congolese city of Goma. On this day, look out for Scarlet Tufted Malachite Sunbirds and the Rwenzori Turaco. We will spend our night in Kisoro, a small town at the foot of the volcano range.

Day 14: It is time to travel back to Kampala. Before we go back to Uganda’s capital, however, we want to do birding in Lake Mburo National Park. The lake Mburo area is a vast landscape of wetlands, containing 13 different lakes with Mburo being the largest. After breakfast, we leave Kisoro, pass Kabale and Mbarara, and we prepare for an afternoon boat cruise and birding adventure at Lake Mburo.

Day 15: Having covered all the attractive birding hot spots in western Uganda, we take you back to Kampala or Entebbe Airport, so that you can catch your flight back home or start your next adventure!
