We had the most amazing time in Botswana — it didn’t just meet expectations, it exceeded them.
Originally, we were meant to visit the Moremi Game Reserve, but due to the unprecedented rainfall and resulting flooding, Moremi and several other campsites were closed. Hayden and Katie worked incredibly hard to find an alternative so our safari didn’t have to be cancelled, and thanks to them we ended up at the Kaziikini campsite instead.
The adventure began long before we arrived. Heavy rains had made parts of the road impassable, so we had to go off‑road, turning the journey itself into an exciting experience with plenty to see along the way.
When we reached our campsite, we were greeted by an elephant standing right next to our camping area — an unforgettable welcome.
Over our three days in the bush, we went on several game drives. The early‑morning drives were especially magical: heading out in the dark with a fresh coffee in hand, wrapped in the cosy fleece‑lined ponchos provided, and watching the sun rise over the landscape.
What made the drives truly special was Hayden’s knowledge and passion. His lifetime of experience shone through as he taught us what to look for — not just animals, but tracks, sounds, and subtle changes in the landscape. Having binoculars made it even more exciting, especially when you were the one to spot something moving and realise it wasn’t just a “wild log”.
The sundowner drives were another highlight. Watching the sun set with a cold drink, while elephants and giraffes wandered nearby, felt like the ultimate African experience. Katie was always prepared with drinks and snacks, making every stop feel relaxed and special.
We chose to camp under canvas because we love camping and wanted the full bush experience. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, with proper mattresses and duvets, and we slept incredibly well. Listening to the sounds of the bush at night was far more soothing than we expected.
The only animals we didn’t manage to see were rhino, wild dogs, and hyenas. We did see one lion — an unforgettable moment, even if it was the only time I felt slightly nervous. Hayden handled the situation perfectly and we always felt completely safe.
I will definitely be returning to Botswana with Photographic Safari Adventures. Hopefully next time we’ll make it to Moremi (as long as it’s not underwater!) so I can tick off the animals I missed this time.
