Momela Gate to Miriakampa Hut

The track begins at Momela Gate and passes through open grassland populated by Cape buffalo and warthogs. You might also see giraffes and elephants. Continue climbing steadily through the montane forest. You will eat your lunch here. The trek continues after lunch through a less dense forest, where there are many birds and monkeys, including the black and white Colobus monkey. You'll have your first close-up views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone by mid-afternoon.

Miriakampa Hut to Saddle Hut

The path from Miriakampa Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a steady, steep ascent. The path begins in a beautiful and lush montane forest and continues beyond the halfway point of Elephant Back Ridge, uphill through giant heather and other moorland vegetation to Saddle Hut for lunch.

Hike from the Summit to Arusha

The summit day will begin around 12:00 a.m After a one-hour steep climb to Rhino Point, the path continues along an ash and rock ridge to Cobra Point. Dep on speed you will be able to see the sunrise at Cobra Point or the summit. In the early morning light, the path back to Rhino Point follows a narrow ridge between the crater's sloping outer wall and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall. Brunch and a short rest are taken at Saddle Hut before continuing down to Miriakampa Hut and then to Arusha.
