Day 1

Volcanoes

Day 1: Arrival Our Cycads representative will meet you on your arrival at Kanombe international airport, Kigali. You will be driven to Ruhengeri the gate of Volcanoes national park. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Nest Camp or Muhabura Hotel.

Day 2

Volcanoes

Day 2: mountain gorilla tracking Have an early breakfast then drive to the park headquarters of Volcanoes national park in Ruhengeri. An official from the park will brief you shortly before you embark on the gorilla tracking exercise. The time spent in the forest will depend on the movements of the gorillas. Tracking can take half an hour but in some instances can even take as long as 6 hours. It is advisable to equip yourself with packed lunch and plenty of water which are necessary for long tracking hours. Rain gear and a pair of strong walking boots are also a must have. Visit the mountain gorilla sanctuary and on your return, you will receive a certificate: souvenir for every successful tracker. Return to Gorilla Nest Camp or Muhabura Hotel in Ruhengeri for dinner and overnight.

Day 3

Day 3: to Lake Kivu beach Enjoy a hearty breakfast and then leave Ruhengeri for Gisenyi. Gisenyi is a pretty town located on the shores of Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s main water body. Relax and enjoy beach activities like sport fishing, boating and swimming. Check in to Kivu Hotel or Palm Beach Hotel for lunch, dinner and overnight.

Day 4

Day 4: explore the culture of the Rwandese After having breakfast, leave Gisenyi. Proceed to Nyanza and visit the royal palace of the Mwami (traditional king of Rwanda). An onsite story teller will narrate the facts on the pre-colonial kingdom’s history. From Nyanza, drive to Butare and visit the national cultural museum. Have lunch after which you will drive to Gikongoro to tour the Murambi genocide memorial. Proceed to Nyungwe national park arriving in time for dinner and overnight at ORTPN Gisakura guest house.

Day 5

Day 5: Primates walk in Nyungwe national park Have an early breakfast after which you will proceed to the park headquarters.  A park official will brief you shortly after which you will go on a primates’ walk in Nyungwe forest. This trek can take long between 1-6 hours depending on the movement of the primates. It is advisable to carry plenty of water and a picnic lunch on this walk. This walk will reward you with sights of large troops of colobus monkey and chimpanzees. Retire for dinner and overnight at ORTPN Gisakura guest house after the walk.

Day 6

Akagera

Day 6: to Akagera national park After breakfast, leave Nyungwe national park. Drive to Akagera national park located along Rwanda-Tanzania border. An evening game drive in the park may reward you with sights of Burchell’s Zebra, lions, elephants, topi, giraffes, impalas and over 425 species of birds including the shoe billed stock, African jacana, sacred ibis goliath heron. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 7

Akagera

Day 7: boat trip on Lake Ihema   Rise early for a game drive to catch the early risers that you might have missed yesterday. Have midmorning breakfast, followed by lunch. In the late afternoon, have a boat trip on Lake Ihema. View large pods of hippo, huge Nile crocodiles and numerous water birds. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 8

Day 8: departure Reserved for transfers to Kigali international airport. END OF THE SAFARI IN RWANDA
