Masai Mara (Maasai Mara) is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves and it is one of the best-known and most popular reserves. Masai Mara and the Serengeti National Park form Africa’s most diverse, incredible, and most spectacular ecosystems and possibly the world’s top safari big game viewing ecosystem. Safaris are without a doubt some of the best you ever get.
In this park lie the shimmering waters of Lake Nakuru which is packed with pink flamingoes. Lake Nakuru National Park is also the first rhino sanctuary in Kenya, and it was established right after the rhinos became an endangered species. The park hosts a large population of them.
Amboseli is a land of wide dry plains with the vistas stretching to the farthest horizon to become one with the sky. It is dotted with green swamps among semi-arid plains of acacia trees and grasses where great herds of elephants rule the land. The park is renowned for its elephant population - large, tusked bulls, of which the most iconic Tim, a huge elephant with tusks reaching the ground, sadly died of natural causes in 2020, at an estimated age of fifty years. Amboseli was also home to Echo, probably the most researched elephant in the world. Dr Cynthia Moss, an American conservationist, followed her for forty years until Echo, the star of many books and documentaries, died aged sixty in 2009. The stunning backdrop of the tallest African mountain, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, makes Amboseli a darling for photographers and filmmakers.
Divided by road and rail from the adjacent Tsavo East, Tsavo West National Park covers a good 9.000 kilometres. Together with adjoining ranches and protected areas, they comprise the Tsavo Conservation Area. Tsavo West National Park is more mountainous and wetter, with swamps, Lake Jipe, and the four enchanting natural Mzima springs.Tsavo West homes a variety of wildlife, and also a black rhino sanctuary. So you are likely to see the critically endangered eastern black rhinoceros and the rest of the big five - the maneating maneless lions, giant elephants, and cape buffalos, leopards. Tall necks of the biggest giraffes in Africa, cute bushbabies, herds of hartebeest, and much more are awaiting! Perhaps a guided walk along the Tsavo River? Thanks to its topography, it offers also excellent rock climbing opportunities.
