The RN7 connects Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital to the city port of Toliara, along the Mozambique Channel on nearly 935 km. It runs through the highlands and rice fields, a forest sheltering lemurs, chameleons and other curiosities endemic to Madagascar. This is a 14 days tour which allows experiencing the landscapes and unique biodiversity of Madagascar. Customers will evolve in a small group, enter through 4 different microclimates and go out to meet the lemurs in the forest. In brief, a tour that combines discovery, authenticity, fun, humanity, and a Malagasy gastronomic experience. Connecting with local communities is possible along the route.

Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: Arrival in Madagascar and transfer to hotel. You will be welcomed by our team at the international airport of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. You will then be transferred to your hotel in the city center.  

Day 2

Day 2: City tour of Antananarivo & Royal citadel of Ambohimanga. Discover Antananarivo, its colorful life, its history and architecture. We spend the morning in the Old City where will be introduced to the architecture and urbanism of the capital of Madagascar. We will drive through the busy and vibrant streets of the capital. We will also visit the royal citadel of Ambohimanga, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to learn about the history of the Madagascar kingdom and the rich culture of this island.  

Day 3

Day 3: Drive from the capital to the rainforest of Andasibe We start our journey towards the Eastern part of the island. We reach the Andasibe National Park by the end of the day and we do our first visit of the park that same evening to discover some nocturnal animals.  

Day 4

Andasibe-Mantadia

Day 4-5: Explore the rainforest of Andasibe . The forest of the Andasibe Mantadia Park is home to 108 species of birds ,14 species of lemurs in there , 51 species , and 84 species of amphibians. At 7:00am, we will reach the entrance of the Andasibe-Mantadia National park.  We will hike in the rain forest to track lemurs and at the same time see various species of plants, trees, insects and reptiles. We will also seek the largest lemur of Madagascar: the famous “Indri Indri” also known as “Babakoto” in Malagasy. This lemur is endemic to the site and is its icon. We will also explore the famous Vakona island for close up experiences and many photo opportunities with the animals.  

Day 6

Day 6: Andasibe – Ambatolampy – Antsirabe We leave the rainforest and come back to the highlands to drive the famous national road 7, which leads to the South of Madagascar. Our first lunch-stop will be in Ambatolampy where we will meet villagers who make handmade traditional pots from recycled aluminium. In the afternoon, we will reach the town of Antsirabe, known for its thermal waters and rickshaws.  

Day 7

Day 7: Antsirabe – Ambositra – Fianarantsoa We continue our journey heading south across the highlands to reach Ambositra, the Malagasy handicrafts’capital located 105 km from Antsirabe. In this city known for its woodcarving Zafimaniry Art, we will visit different handcrafter workshops. We will have lunch in this city during which some folkloric dancers and musicians will perform a show. At the end of the afternoon, we arrive in Fianarantsoa.  

Day 8

Day 8: Visit of Sahambavy tea plantation and visit of old City of Fianarantsoa Built in the early 19th century, Fianarantsoa was placed by the World Monuments Fund on its  Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites . After breakfast, we will tour the old town of Fianarantsoa, which, thanks to the richness of the architecture , shows the different stages of colonization and evangelization of Madagascar. We will see some building conservation and restoration work is has began on the old buildings in the old town. In the afternoon, we will visit the tea plantation of Sahambavy.  

Day 9

Day 9: Fianarantsoa – Ambalavao – Ranohira ( Isalo ) We continue our road trip with the majestic Andringitra in the background.  We leave the highlands of Madagascar and enter a new microclimate:  the dry bush and semi desert of southern Madagascar. Its inhabitants are specialized in producing silk and greeting cards made by a very old process. We will visit these traditional mills. After our lunch in Ambalavao, we will transfer you to your hotel in the rock formations of Isalo.  

Day 10

Day 10:  Isalo – Visit of the Isalo National Park Accompanied by your park ranger, we will hike through the canyons and oases of Isalo and its lunar landscape to reach some waterfalls. This environment was formed during the Jurassic age and where the unique flora has evolved adapting to the existing conditions. There are 77 species of birds live in Isalo among which the Benson rock-thrush ( Pseudocossyphus bensoni ). During that hike, we will see different species of lemurs, including the world famous ring tailed lemur.  After the canyons, we will go to different places to see a panoramic view of the landscape. On the second day, we will be relaxing in this environment, have the opportunity to swim in the natural pools. By late afternoon, we will contemplate the sunset over the famous window of Isalo.  

Day 11

Day 11: Ranohira – Ifaty We make a passage through Ilakaka, the city of the rush to sapphire and we will end our road trip in Ifaty.  

Day 12

Day 12: Ifaty You will be able to visit the baobab forest and then you will have the rest of the day to enjoy the beach and waters of the Mozambique channel, visit the Vezo fishermen village at your leisure, connect with the locals.  

Day 13

Day 13: Transfer to Toliara, Flying back to Antananarivo You will be transferred back to the port of Toliara. One of our staff will drive you to the airport so you can fly back to Antananarivo.  

Day 14

Day 14: Markets of Antananarivo and international departure. Take advantage of the available time remaining to browse through the city and its handcraft market. Late in the evening you are transferred to the airport. End of our services.
