Itinerary
Day 1
Day 1 When you and your family arrive in South Africa, Wild Planet Safari will be there to welcome you to the country. You will have some time to exchange some currency into Rand (South African currency) since this will be the best place to do so. We will leave the airport and take you on a drive by tour of the city on route to your guest house in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. You will have some time to refresh before we take you to a shopping centre where you can buy any camping gear or other items you may like to bring with on your safari. Should your flights not allow time for this we will be happy to do this for you provided you send us a list. This evening we will take you to a local restaurant and we will take some time to discuss the tour and answer any questions you may have. Tonight you will be staying at a guest house with en suite rooms. Each room can sleep 2.
Day 2
Day 2 This morning after breakfast we will take you to explore the most popular attractions in Johannesburg. Our first stop will be Gold Reef City, this is a museum and amusement park with lots of different rides that will provide much entertainment and education for the whole family. We will have an own expense lunch at the park before we leave to visit the Cradle of Humankind. The Cradle of Humankind is a world heritage site that showcases the evolution of man in Africa. Many early man fossils have been found in the area and the second oldest human skull on the planet was unearthed here. There is also an amazing cave full of crystals and other geological marvels. We will return to the guest house in the late afternoon to freshen up before we go for an own expense dinner at a popular local restaurant. It's a full day, this could mean that there may not be enough time to visit all of these attractions due to the family's speed, though your guide will advise you should this scenario arise.
Day 3
Kruger
Day 3 This morning we depart Johannesburg and head off to explore the east of South Africa. The driving distance today is 500km but we have fitted in many different stops to make the drive more comfortable for the children. We will visit the Blyde River Canyon, the 3rd biggest canyon in the world, you will get to see many different view points along the canyon, including The Pinnacle, God's Window and The 3 Rondawel. This is one of the most spectacular scenic routes in the country and is named the Panorama Route. On route we will stop for a picnic lunch. At the end of the drive we will travel down the Drakensberg escarpment before we arrive in the town called Hazyview. Hazyview is also known as the gateway to Kruger National Park and the area has many great activities for you to enjoy. We will be staying at a beautiful lodge situated in a forest lining the Sabie River. Tonight we will enjoy dinner whilst listening to the amazing sounds of the forest and the wild river.
Day 4
Kruger
Day 4 This morning we will take you on a short walk along the Sabie River to show you some of the indigenous plants and animals found in the area. You will then have the opportunity to visit the Elephant Sanctuary. You will also have the chance to visit a Reptile Park. This park houses many different snakes, lizards, crocodiles and alligators. There is also an interactive display that will amaze the whole family. After lunch we will proceed in to Kruger National Park. It is undoubtedly the best effort in conservation on earth. It is home to all the animals that come to mind when thinking of Africa and many many more. This afternoon we will take a short game drive in search for any animals that are in the area. Tonight we will be staying at the main rest camp in the park, Skukuza, in a family cabin. We will enjoy dinner around the fire and listen to the sounds of the wild.
Day 5
Kruger
Day 5 Today we will spend exploring the park, we will go for a drive in the morning in search of wild animals, if we are lucky we may encounter some lions as they find a shady place to rest for the day. When we return to camp you will have some time to relax and explore the camp, go for a swim, visit the craft shop, browse through the photo galleries or visit the Kruger Park Museum. We will leave the camp a couple hours before lunch and take a slow drive to our next camp. We will follow the rivers and visit all the waterholes that are excellent places to find animals in search of water. We will get to our next camp, Berg en Dal, in the south of Kruger, in the late afternoon. You can relax or walk the rhino trail around the camp perimeter. We will enjoy another great African meal for dinner. Tonight you will be staying in bungalows perfectly hidden in the bush, the camp is surrounded by an electric fence to make sure you and your family are safe from any of the wild animals.
Day 6
Kruger
Day 6 This morning you and your family will have the chance to go on an open vehicle safari. A Kruger ranger will take you out into the park in an open vehicle to give you an opportunity to get really close with the animals. When you arrive back at camp we will have lunch and then it is time for you to relax and enjoy the camp facilities. This will be a perfect time to walk the Rhino trail and learn about the vegetation found in the area and an afternoon swim will be a perfect way to finish the day. We will be having an early dinner tonight as you will have the chance to go on a Kruger night drive. A Kruger ranger will take you out into the bush in an open safari vehicle during the evening. You will use spotlights to scan the bush to find any nocturnal animals in the area. This is an excellent opportunity to find predators such as lions and leopards on the move, if you are very lucky you may even find them on an hunt. Your accommodation will be a family cottage for this night.
Day 7
Kruger
Day 7 After a morning drive we will return to camp, pack the vehicle and then leave Kruger National Park. We will be traveling through Zululand to our next stop Hluhluwe, a magnificent park set in the mountains of Zululand. The area is sub-tropical and the vegetation is lush and green. The park is home to the Big 5 (lion, leopard, buffalo, Rhino and elephant) and some rarer animals we may not have seen yet, like Nyala and Wild Dog. The animals in the park have become very accustomed to vehicles on safari and they allow you to get really close, giving opportunities for amazing photo's. We will arrive at the park in the afternoon after a 450 km drive, and we will stop for lunch on route. Our camp is high on top of the hill overlooking the park. The views from the lodge are breath-taking and you can spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the view. This evening we will have dinner at the lodge restaurant. Tonight you will be staying in a cottage high on top of the hill.
Day 8
Day 8 This morning you will go on another open vehicle safari, this time with a Zulu ranger, if you are lucky you will find yourselves in very close range to some huge white rhino. When you return to camp we will be packed and ready to transfer to our next camp, Mpila. It will be about a 2 hour drive over all the mountains and we will be sure to stop at all the best view points along the way, we will also stop for a picnic lunch on the way. This will be our last day together in a Big 5 reserve and this afternoon we will go on one last game drive together and enjoy Africa's wildlife one more time. This evening we will have a traditional African barbecue and fall asleep to the sounds of the bush.
Day 9
Day 9 This morning we will leave Imfolozi National Park and continue traveling through Zululand. We will be driving through the area that King Shaka Zulu used to rule the Zulu kingdom from. We will continue to the coast, along the way we will stop for an own expense lunch. We will arrive at our beach cottage just after lunch time. We will be staying at a hotel/ beach cottage that is situated a few meters away from the beach. The beach is safe and watched over by life guards, there is also a tidal pool that provides a safe place to swim away from the currents. The Indian Ocean is warm all year round with summer temperatures reaching around 24'C and winter around 20'C. This afternoon you and your family can relax and enjoy the beaches. If the weather is not ideal for the beach we can arrange to go to The Gateway, the largest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere. Tonight we will go out for dinner at a restaurant of your choice, your guide will suggest the best spot for you and your family.
Day 10
Day 10 We will have a relaxed start this morning and give you a chance to recharge. Just before lunch we will visit Durban city. First stop will be the Golden Mile, Durban's famous beachfront. You can take a relaxed walk from the start to the finish of the Golden Mile and at the finish there is uShaka marine world. Here you can enjoy looking at the aquarium, a dolphin show, a penguin show, a seal show or you can go snorkeling in one of the tropical tanks. Next door to the marine world is a wet and wild park full of entertaining water slides and activities for all to enjoy. After uShaka we will take you on a drive-by tour of the city, we will finish the tour of Durban with a walk over the arch of the soccer stadium. Both uShaka and the stadium arch are own expense optional activities. You can also choose to spend the entire day at the beach by our cottage. Tonight you can leave us with the children while you have a romantic dinner for two or you can take the family out for dinner.
Day 11
Day 11 Today we will leave the city of Durban and the beaches of the Indian Ocean behind us and travel up into the longest mountain range in Southern Africa, The Drakensberg. We will be spending one night in the southern part of the range and 2 nights in the northern section. Today the drive is 150km and on the way we will drive through the very scenic, Valley of a Thousand Hills and take some time to visit a beautiful waterfall, the Howick Falls. We will arrive at our destination, situated perfectly under the towering cliffs of the southern Drakensberg. After lunch and some time to refresh we can go for a guided walk, along the river, through the mountain forests in search for the wildlife found in the area. This evening we will make a big bonfire to keep us warm and enjoy dinner under the stars. This evening you will be staying in a 4 bedroom, Dutch styled mountain lodge.
Day 12
Day 12 Today we leave the southern Drakensberg and travel further into the mountain range. We will take a slow scenic drive along the spectacular mountain roads and passes to our next lodge in the northern Drakensberg. It is another short drive of about 180 km along the way we will stop to visit a bushman rock art gallery and we will stop at a restaurant for an own expense lunch. We will arrive at the mountain resort just after lunch time. The resort offers many activities for the whole family to enjoy; there are options to play tennis, mountain biking, horse riding, bird watching, fishing, river tubing, and golf. The afternoon is set aside for you to enjoy the resort and relax at your own pace. You will be spending 2 night's here in a family cottage. We will cook dinner over the open fire and enjoy it under a starlit African sky.
Day 13
Day 13 We will spend the day today enjoying all the best that the Drakensberg Mountains can offer. In the morning we will go for a hike in the area that the resort is in, the hike will be easy and comfortable for the children to enjoy. We will take a picnic lunch to enjoy along the way and we will stop for a swim in a fresh mountain stream. When we return you can relax or go for a horse ride, a riding guide will take you on a pace that suits your experience along horse trails in the mountains. You can enjoy a round of golf, try your hand at trout fishing or you can go for another hike. Tonight we enjoy our last dinner cooked together as a group before we take some time to stargaze and learn about some southern hemisphere stars. Tonight you will be staying in a 2 bedroom family cottage.
Day 14
Day 14 This morning we leave the Drakensberg Mountains and return to Johannesburg. This is the last day of the tour and you will have a few options for the rest of your holiday. It will be a 5 hour drive about 400km to Johannesburg. Along the way we will stop for an own expense lunch. We suggest you fly from Johannesburg to Cape Town and enjoy 4 days at your own pace exploring the amazing city. We can take you to the airport on
Day 14
day 14 for a flight or you can choose to spend another night in Johannesburg before the flight. We can also extend the tour by another 6 days and finish in Cape Town if you have the time. We will then explore the Eastern Cape and its reserves, the Garden Route and the Southern Tip of Africa. Please feel free to enquire.
