Safari summary

This nine-day journey blends classic game viewing with genuine time on foot — a rare combination in Kenya. It opens in Nairobi with an arrival night at The Boma Hotel, then explores Nairobi National Park at dawn, where rhinos and lions roam against a skyscraper skyline, followed by the Nairobi Safari Walk, the Carnivore Restaurant and the Giraffe Centre. From there the route runs south to Amboseli, where immense elephant herds move beneath the snows of Kilimanjaro and a guided walk to Observation Hill opens up the whole ecosystem. North again to the Great Rift Valley, with a boat safari past hippos, a walking safari on Crescent Island among giraffe and zebra, and a guided trek through the geothermal drama of Hell's Gate. The safari closes in the Maasai Mara, with a dawn-to-dusk game drive across the golden plains and a visit to a traditional manyatta. Walking distances range from a flat 2km boardwalk to a 10km gorge trek, so a reasonable level of mobility is rewarded throughout. Accommodation is comfortable and well placed — Boma Hotel, Amboseli Sopa Lodge, Lake Naivasha Resort and Maasai Mara Sopa Lodge — on Bed & Breakfast in Nairobi and Full Board on safari.

Nairobi – Arrival and Urban Pulse

Step into sun-drenched Nairobi, where our representative meets you at Jomo Kenyatta Airport and transfers you to The Boma Hotel, a garden-filled sanctuary just beyond the city's hum. The evening is for gentle acclimatisation — a cooling dip in the pool, a sunset drink, and quiet anticipation of the wild days ahead.

Walking Details: 1.2 miles (2 km) at Nairobi Safari Walk. Flat, paved walkways. After breakfast, drive into Nairobi National Park at dawn, watching the cityscape dissolve into golden savanna where rhinos, buffalo and lions roam with skyscrapers as backdrop. Later, the elevated boardwalks of the Safari Walk bring you metres from crocodiles and chameleons. Lunch at the Carnivore Restaurant, then the Giraffe Centre, where a palmful of pellets brings you eye to eye with a Rothschild's giraffe.

Nairobi to Amboseli

Amboseli

Depart after breakfast as the city fades into sun-bleached savannah, lone acacias casting long shadows and Maasai herders guiding cattle across ancient plains. Arrive in Amboseli for lunch at Amboseli Sopa Lodge, framed by snow-capped Kilimanjaro. An afternoon game drive reveals immense elephant herds, flamingo-blushed lakes, watchful lions and graceful giraffes, closing as alpenglow ignites the mountain's glaciers.

Amboseli – On Foot to the Viewpoint

Walking Details: 1.9 miles (3 km) round trip. Greet dawn with an early game drive as elephants stand silhouetted against the rose-tinted snows of Kilimanjaro and buffalo emerge from misty marshes. After a leisurely lunch, trade the vehicle for your own footsteps on the walk to Observation Hill, rewarded by a wind-swept panorama of emerald swamps, golden plains and the cloud-piercing peak. An evening game drive follows in honey-gold light, then dinner beneath endless stars.

Amboseli to Lake Naivasha

Walking Details: 4–6 km of exploratory walking. Flat. Bid Kilimanjaro farewell and journey northwest, descending the escarpment into the sun-drenched floor of the Great Rift Valley. Arrive at Lake Naivasha Resort for lunch amid bird-filled gardens sloping to the water. An afternoon boat safari glides past snorting hippo pods and acacia canopies where fish eagles hunt, landing on Crescent Island for a walking safari among grazing giraffe, curious zebra and gentle antelope.

Lake Naivasha Resort (FB)

Hell's Gate

Walking Details: 3.1–4 miles (8–10 km) through the gorge and plains. Varied, with rocky. A short drive delivers you to Hell's Gate National Park, where you trade the vehicle for footsteps on a guided walk through a world forged by fire — towering red sandstone cliffs, hissing fumaroles venting the earth's steamy breath, and cool narrow gorges. Return for a late lunch at the resort, then an afternoon at leisure by the pool or in quiet gardens, before dinner as twilight settles over the lake.

Lake Naivasha to Maasai Mara

Masai Mara

After breakfast, travel to the Maasai Mara as the Rift Valley recedes and fertile plateaus rise, the air humming with anticipation. Arrive at Maasai Mara Sopa Lodge, your hilltop haven overlooking the legendary savannah, in time for a welcome lunch. The afternoon brings a visit to a traditional manyatta — warriors performing the rhythmic adumu jumping dance, thorn-bush enclosures, and the living heritage of a pastoral community.

Maasai Mara Sopa Lodge (FB)

Maasai Mara – The Great Plains

Dawn breaks gold and rose across the endless grasslands as your morning game drive crosses the Mara's rolling sea — wildebeest herds thundering, lion prides surveying their kingdom, giraffes silhouetted against the sky. Return for lunch and a siesta, then set out again as the light softens to amber, seeking leopards draped over branches, elephants bathing in red-dust rivers, and cheetahs poised for the chase.

Maasai Mara to Nairobi

Enjoy a final unhurried breakfast with sweeping views of the Mara plains. The scenic transfer back to Nairobi pauses at a Great Rift Valley viewpoint, where the ancient escarpment stretches to the horizon beneath the vast African sky — a last magnificent postcard. Continue through highlands and bustling towns, arriving in Nairobi by early afternoon for your transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
