Safari summary
The Rongai Route is the only route on the northeastern part of the mountain. This route is gaining in popularity because it is the second easiest after Marangu and it has amazing wilderness conditions.
The Rongai Route is recommended for climbers who want to avoid the huge numbers of climbers on other routes. This route can be started from the Tanzanian or the Kenyan side of the mountain and can be achieved in 6 days.
The Rongai Route is only used to climb up the mountain and at the final stage it joins up with the Marangu Route, which is also the ascending route. This route has lots of caves, which are partly also used as overnight accommodations.
The only Kilimanjaro route starting from the mountain’s north, the Rongai Route is one of the least travelled routes up the mountain.
A less steep, less crowded, and drier route due to its north-facing orientation, the Rongai Route is fast gaining in popularity with those wanting a unique climbing experience.

Itinerary
Rongai Gate - Simba Camp
Kilimanjaro
After a scenic drive with a quick permit stop in Marangu, you’ll arrive at the charming village of Nale Moru. From here, your hike begins along a wide path through farmland dotted with maize and potatoes, then into a peaceful pine forest. As the trail gently climbs, you might spot wildlife along the way. By late afternoon, you’ll reach your first camp on the edge of the moorlands, with sweeping views across the Kenyan plains.
Simba Camp
Simba camp - Kikelewa Camp
Kilimanjaro
After an early breakfast, you’ll hit the trail and hike through the moorland zone, where the views start opening up fast. As you gain altitude, the eastern ice fields of Kilimanjaro begin to appear as an incredible sight. The climb gets steeper near Kikelewa Camp, but the reward is worth it: wide-open views, fresh mountain air, and a warm meal waiting. It’s the perfect spot to relax and recharge for tomorrow’s journey.
Kikelewa Camp
Kikelewa Camp - Mawenzi Tarn Hut
Kilimanjaro
A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb views. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.
Mawenzi Tarn Hut
Mawenzi Tarn Hut - Kibo Hut
Kilimanjaro
Cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent very early.
Kibo Hut
Kibo Hut - Summit - Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro
You'll start the summit climb in the dark, using headlamps to guide you through steep, rocky trails and maybe even snow. It’s cold and tough, but with steady steps and a positive mindset, you'll reach Gilman’s Point, then Uhuru Peak-the highest point in Africa. The views are absolutely worth it. After snapping that summit photo, you'll head down to Kibo for lunch and rest before continuing to Horombo camp.
Horombo Hut
Horombo Hut–Marangu Gate-Hotel
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). Kilimanjaro Unforgettable vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour).
