Safari summary
The Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is arguably the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, spanning over 14,750 km² (5,700 sq mi). Its name, derived from the Maasai word "Siringet," means "endless plains," a fitting description for its vast, rolling grasslands. The Serengeti is globally renowned for hosting the Great Wildebeest Migration, an annual spectacle where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing and water. Beyond the migration, it boasts an incredible concentration of predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas, making it a prime location to witness dramatic wildlife interactions. You'll also encounter elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and countless bird species. The park's diverse ecosystems, from open savannahs to riverine forests and kopjes (rocky outcrops), support this rich biodiversity.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a unique UNESCO World Heritage Site that harmoniously integrates wildlife conservation with the pastoralist lifestyle of the Maasai people. It spans over 8,292 km² (3,202 sq mi), but its crown jewel is the Ngorongoro Crater. This immense, intact volcanic caldera, approximately 20 km (12 miles) wide and 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep, acts as a natural enclosure, creating one of the most concentrated wildlife populations in Africa. Within the crater, you can find the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) in relatively close proximity, making for exceptional game viewing. It's one of the best places to spot the endangered black rhino. The crater floor comprises various habitats, including grasslands, swamps, and forests, attracting a staggering array of animals and birds year-round. Beyond the crater, the NCA also features diverse landscapes, including the Olduvai Gorge, an important paleoanthropological site.
