Safari summary

Your day begins very early with a 4:00 am pickup from your place of stay in Dar es Salaam, followed by a transfer to the train station for your 6:00 am departure. Enjoy a comfortable journey as the train heads toward Morogoro, arriving at approximately 7:45 am. Upon arrival, you will meet your professional safari guide who will warmly welcome you and begin the scenic drive to Mikumi National Park, a journey that takes you through beautiful landscapes and local surroundings before reaching the park at around 10:00 am.

After completing the necessary park entry formalities, you will embark on an exciting morning game drive. Mikumi National Park offers a remarkable introduction to African wildlife, often compared to the Serengeti due to its open horizons and abundant animals. The park’s diverse terrain includes vast floodplains, open grasslands famously referred to as the “Little Serengeti,” and woodland areas that support a wide range of wildlife species.

As the day progresses into late morning and early afternoon, you will continue exploring different sections of the park, increasing your chances of spotting various animals in their natural habitat. Around 2:00 pm, you will take a break for lunch at the park bandas, allowing you to relax and refresh before continuing your adventure.

In the afternoon, the game drive continues, focusing on the famous hippo pools along the Kisungura Circuit. These pools are a highlight of Mikumi, where large groups of hippos can be seen wallowing in thick mud or submerging themselves in the water to keep cool. The area also attracts many other animals that come to drink, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. While hippos are the main attraction here, you may also spot elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, warthogs, and occasionally predators such as lions. Mikumi is even known for rare sightings of tree-climbing lions, a unique behavior not commonly seen elsewhere.

The park is home to over 300 bird species, making it equally rewarding for bird lovers. Its location on the northern border of the vast Selous ecosystem (now part of Nyerere National Park) creates a rich and expansive wilderness that supports an incredible diversity of flora and fauna.

Later in the afternoon, around 4:00 pm, you will begin your journey back to Morogoro by road. Upon arrival, you will prepare to board the evening train departing at 7:25 pm. Relax during the return journey to Dar es Salaam, arriving at approximately 9:05 pm. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred back to your hotel, marking the end of a memorable day filled with wildlife encounters, scenic landscapes, and authentic safari experiences.
