Itinerary

Day 1

Zambezi

Day 1 Destination: Arrival / Livingstone Accommodation: Tongabezi Lodge (Full board + activities) Arrive at the Livingstone Airport where you will be met by a representative of Tongabezi who will transfer you to the lodge. Tongabezi is a lovely lodge set on a sweeping bend in the Zambezi. It's long been one of the region's most romantic hideaways and its experienced team of staff maintain a smart, exclusive and distinctly Zambian feel. The food is first-class, served beside the river or on your private veranda. Then there's a thatched riverside bar, spacious lounge area and a rock swimming pool under a tumbling waterfall. Tongabezi has five beautiful thatched 'cottages', all with large picture windows opening onto verandas beside the river. These are tastefully furnished and include an elegant en suite bathroom with a shower and a bath. A sixth 'garden cottage' has two linked bedrooms and a living room, surrounded by a private walled garden. In addition, there are four spectacular individual 'houses' – stylish suites with open sides that face the river.

Day 2

Kafue | Serengeti | Victoria Falls

Day 2 & 3 Destination: Livingstone / Kafue National Park Accommodation: Shumba Camp (Full board + activities) Enjoy breakfast after which you will visit the mighty Victoria Falls. Depart Livingstone by light aircraft to the Kafue National Park. A short helicopter transfer will take you to the Shumba Camp. Standing on an island of large, majestic fig trees, in the centre of the Busanga Plains, the camp overlooks vast floodplains in all directions. This is quite a spread out camp, built high off the ground and linked by wooden walkways. Despite being in a very open environment the camp has been well camouflaged with the use of grass roofs, helping it to blend into its surroundings. From various vantage points around the camp you can often see antelope, typically puku and red lechwe, grazing the lush grasses below. Each of the very spacious six tented rooms has been built up on raised platforms about 2m off the ground. Canvas walls are fastened around a wood-and-pole structure to create a substantial yet solid tented room. Every room has two large queen-sized beds, an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and an indoor and outdoor shower. Activities from Shumba Camp centre around exploring the vast Busanga Plains by day and night 4WD safari drives. During the early months of the season (May – June), boat trips are also often possible. The surrounding terrain might be better compared to Serengeti's open plains than any of Zambia's usual bush landscape. This makes it a worthwhile and contrasting inclusion on any safari to this country.

Day 4

Kafue | South Luangwa

Day 4 & 5 Destination: Kafue National Park / South Luangwa Accommodation: Luangwa Safari House (Full board + activities) Depart the Kafue National Park and continue by light aircraft to the South Luangwa National Park.  This stunning new four bedroom private house is situated on the edge of a seasonal lagoon where the game, including herds of elephants and giraffe, feed and water throughout the day. Sleeping eight, there is an enormous shared living area, balconies, verandas, a swimming pool and an open terrace for dining. There are hosted activities for children (minimum age 7) independent of parents, and a child minder is also available.  From the house there is the daily option of a walk or a game drive. The drives include morning, afternoon and night drives. An all day drive, with a picnic lunch, is always available. Other activities such as a cultural day at the Kawaza Village are also available.

Day 6

Lower Zambezi | South Luangwa | Zambezi

Day 6 & 7 Destination: South Luangwa / Lower Zambezi National Park Accommodation: Chongwe River House (Full board + activities) Depart the South Luangwa National Park and continue to the Lower Zambezi. The location of the house is at the end of a massive winterthorn grove, on the banks of the peaceful Chongwe River, a tributary of the Zambezi.  The view of the nearby mountainous escarpment is spectacular. From the main room you look out over the deck and pool to the river and mountains beyond. All the furniture in the sitting room has been carved from a single huge fallen winterthorn tree, as if it has fallen across the room.  Beautifully soft coloured pebbles from the Chongwe River have been embedded in the ceilings. The ground floor bedrooms are each entered through a tunnel which gives the feeling of walking through a cave. The curved entrance gives privacy without the need for doors. The downstairs bathrooms have water pouring out of the stone ceiling instead of the normal shower rose, whilst the upstairs showers are waterfalls. “Taps” are made from bone and wood and the exquisitely carved basins have been carved out of wood and white marble by the famous Zambian artist, Eddie Mumba.  The upstairs bedrooms have unusual baths, from which you have a view across the bush. The Chongwe area is famous for huge male elephants feeding through the winterthorn grove in which the house is situated and this amazing game experience is enhanced by the fact the Chongwe River itself it the main water source for most of the game in the area.  From the bedrooms, the sitting room and the deck you will have game in view, feeding and watering.
