Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi City to Machame Gate

Kilimanjaro

You'll drive from Moshi to Machame Park Gate for registration formalities. Then we will start walking through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We will continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, we will leave the glades of the rainforest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep, rocky ridge. The Machame route now turns west onto a river gorge until we arrive at the Shira Campsite for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, we will continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the south-east towards the Lava Tower, called the Shark’s Tooth (elevation 4650 m/15,250 ft). Shortly after the tower, we will come to the second junction, which goes to the Arrow Glacier. We will now continue down to the Barranco Camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu

After breakfast, we will leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall (elevation 4250 m/13,900 ft), through the Karanga Valley (elevation 4050 m/13,250 ft), to the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail. We will then continue up to the Barafu Camp. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we will make camp, with views of the summit in the distance.

Day 5: Summit to Mweka Camp

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2:00 am), we will continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Moshi City

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, we will continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear. Our driver will be at the airport to transfer you back to the hotel in Moshi to end your best Kilimanjaro trekking tour. And your best 4-day Tanzania safari for tomorrow starts in Arusha early in the morning.

Day 7: Arusha to Lake Manyara

After breakfast, our driver will pick you up and drive you to Lake Manyara National Park for a game drive. Overnight near Lake Manyara or Karatu.

Day 8: Lake Manyara to Serengeti

After an early breakfast via Ngorongoro Crater, drive to Serengeti National Park, with game drives’ en route. Overnight at the campsite

Day 9: Serengeti to Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro Crater

Early morning game drive in Serengeti National Park. Late afternoon transfer to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Overnight at the campsite

Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. Return to Arusha in the late afternoon and transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home. Alternatively, if you are combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a wildlife safari, you can be dropped off at the Arusha airport. End of your 10-day Kilimanjaro and safari tour.
