Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi

Day 1 – SATURDAY You’ll be met on arrival at Nairobi International Airport by our friendly Gamewatchers representative and transferred to the Souther Sun Mayfair hotel for 1 night.  Alternatively, get directly on safari by staying at Nairobi Tented Camp (optional and at a supplement).  This intimate camp has just eight guest tents offering an authentic safari experience in the heart of Nairobi National Park.  With sweeping plains on one side and the city skyline on the other, the  Park is a unique location for your stay in Nairobi.

Day 2

Nairobi | Samburu

Day 2 – SUNDAY After breakfast we depart Nairobi by 4x4 safari vehicle (with expert guide) and head North to Samburu National Reserve – checking in to Elephant Bedroom Camp where we will spend 2 nights (Full Board basis).  Lunch can be en route or at camp.  This exclusive camp of just 12 luxury tents has a lovely setting within the Reserve, on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River surrounded by doum palms and indigenous trees and shrubs.  After an afternoon / early evening game drive we will stop for drinks at a scenic point to watch the sun go down over the African wilderness.  Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 3

Samburu

Day 3 – MONDAY This morning we wake early for a morning game drive to explore Samburu National Reserve on the look-out for elephants and big cats as well as the unusual animals for which Samburu is noted such as the endangered Grevy’s Zebra and the Reticulated Giraffe.  Breakfast and lunch* at camp.  In the afternoon we take another game drive in this beautiful landscape.  Dinner and overnight at camp. Samburu National Reserve offers a breathtaking sun baked landscape surrounded by mountains - to the west, the sheer sided slopes of majestic Ol Olokwe Mountain form a perfect back drop to any photograph. Animals commonly seen are elephants, lions, cheetahs, grevy zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks, buffalos, oryx, grants gazelles, dikdiks and waterbucks. There are over 350 varieties of birds. These include the famous somali ostriches (distinguished by their unique purple / blue legs during mating season), kingfishers, humming birds, eagles, guinea fowls and vultures. The reserve is also home of the Samburu tribe, cousins of the Maasai, who share the same nomadic, cattle-herding existence and a strict adherence to their age-old rites and customs.

Day 4

Lake Nakuru

Day 4 – TUESDAY After breakfast we set off towards the stunning scenery of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.  Check in to Mbweha Safari Camp for 2 nights.  Mbweha is a high quality safari camp set on the private 6400 acre Congreve Conservancy near the southern border of Lake Nakuru National Park and has spectacular views of the surrounding mountainous landscape.  We will take an escorted nature walk from Mbweha for a close-up view of the local flora and fauna.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru

Day 5 – WEDNESDAY Early breakfast at Mbweha Safari Camp and then set off with a picnic lunch for a full day to explore the Lake Nakuru National Park which is famous for the spectacular pink flamingos that gather on its salt encrusted shores (NB numbers depend on the season) as well as for other bird species including African fish eagles and pelicans.  The woodland and grassland surround the soda lake are home to an abundance of wildlife including black rhino, white rhino, hippo, leopard, lion and the rare Rothschild giraffe.  Dinner and overnight at Mbweha Safari Camp. Lake Nakuru National Park is world famous as the feeding ground of both lesser and greater flamingos. Lake Nakuru was crowned a national park in the sixties. It was estimated then that there were at times more than a million flamingos. Ornithologists describe it as "the most fabulous bird spectacle in the world." Besides the more than 400 species of birds that can be seen in the park there are hippos, reedbuck, waterbuck, black rhino, giraffe, lion, leopard, bushbuck also present.

Day 6

Masai Mara

Day 6 – THURSDAY After an early breakfast we continue our safari by heading to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve, arriving at Tipilikwani Mara Camp for lunch where we will stay for 2 nights.  Tipilkwani Mara Camp has 20 luxury riverfront tents located on the banks of the Talek River overlooking the iconic Mara plains.  After lunch there will be a game drive for the first chance to see the wildlife of the Mara.

Day 7

Masai Mara | Serengeti

Day 7 - FRIDAY A full day with morning and afternoon game drives in the Masai Mara in search of the big cats for which the Mara is renowned.  We will also see a wide variety of Kenya’s other species – great and small – such as elephants, buffalo, giraffe, plains game and much more. The Masai Mara National Game Reserve is a magnificent landscape of open plains bisected by the Mara River and its tributaries and punctuated by marshes and forests. This reserve supports the highest density of game to be seen anywhere considering its size. During the seasonal migrations, the reserve is home to up to a million wildebeest and an equally impressive number of zebra that move into the area from the neighbouring Serengeti National Park, in Tanzania. The reserve is home to all the “Big Five” and it is also possible to observe; baboon, eland, ostrich, bat-eared fox, jackal, and the rivers abound with hippos and crocodiles.

Day 8

Masai Mara | Nairobi

Day 8 - SATURDAY After breakfast, we depart the Masai Mara and make our way back to Nairobi (arriving approx 1.30 to 2p.m.)  Drop off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to check in for your onward flight.
