For the enthusiastic volunteer, this 13 day package is the perfect combination of experiencing the higlights of Southern Namibia before spending the last 4 day volunteering at the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary. Starting in Windhoek, we head west to explore Swakopmund, Namibia’s adventure capital on the Skeleton Coast. Here we can enjoy any number of adrenaline inducing optional activities before starting our journey south. Our next stop after crossing the Tropic of Capricorn is Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert, home to some of the world’s highest sand dunes. Continuing on to Namibia’s deep south where breath taking landscapes abound, we visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, spot the wild horses of the Namib Desert, gaze over the Fish River Canyon, before ending an incredible 7 day trip with the last night at the impressive Quiver Tree Forest before returning to Windhoek. After 7 incredible days exploring Namibia we head out to Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary where we spend the next 4 days getting our hands dirty and doing out part for wildlife conservation. This is the ultimate Namibian adventure for the budget traveller!

Itinerary

Backpackers, Windhoek

Upon arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, we will be transferred to Windhoek. If time permits, we can opt for a City & Township Tour, relax by the pool, or gather supplies in the city center. Dinner tonight is at our own expense, offering the choice of local restaurants or ordering in and enjoying the Chameleon Backpackers' bar. It's important to rest early as we embark on a 7-day exploration of Southern Namibia.

Hotel A La Mer, Swakopmund

You'll be picked up from your Windhoek accommodation at 07:15 and transferred to Walvis Bay for bird-watching, particularly flamingos. We then continue to Swakopmund, a coastal town with German architecture and various activities to enjoy. Dinner is at your own expense, with our guide available to assist you with recommendations and bookings.

Sesriem, Sossusvlei

Namib-Naukluft

We depart Swakopmund around 11:30, allowing for ample time to explore the town or engage in optional activities, such as sandboarding. Our journey takes us east through the Namib gravel plains and two mountain passes, including the impressive Kuiseb Pass. We then reach our destination at Sesriem, where we set up our campsite beneath the towering red dunes of the world's oldest desert, preparing for an exciting day ahead.

We embark on an early morning adventure to witness the captivating sunrise in the dunes. We explore Dune 45 and Dead Vlei, climb towering dunes, visit Sesriem Canyon, and enjoy the golden light at Elim Dune before returning to camp.

Klein Aus Vista

Today, we drive through diverse desert scenery to reach Aus, a small community in the Aus Mountains. Our destination is Klein Aus Vista, located outside Aus within the Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park. After setting up camp in the early afternoon, we can explore the property's unguided hiking trails and enjoy the expansive landscapes, hoping for a beautiful sunset.

We start early on a sealed road, passing through grasslands and desert scenery. Look out for wild desert-adapted horses. Our destination is Kolmanskop, a ghost town and former diamond mine. After a guided tour, we head to Luderitz with its colonial buildings. Returning to Klein Aus Vista, we enjoy the desert horses and a sundowner.

Quiver Tree Forest

Long drive today, taking advantage of the tar road. Heading east then south to Fish River Canyon, second only to the Grand Canyon. Spectacular views of the immense canyon. Continuing north to Keetmanshoop and overnight at Quiver Tree Forest. Quiver trees are Namibia's National Tree. Last night of the safari, reflecting on our adventure around the campfire.

We head north on the main tar road back to Windhoek. Passing Brukkaros, a unique volcano formed by a steam explosion. Gibeon, known for a significant meteor strike in prehistoric times. Lunch stop along the way. Arriving in Windhoek for overnight accommodation. Dinner recommendations available in the city.

Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary

Early breakfast, transfer to Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary. Safe haven for injured or orphaned animals. Re-introduction to the wild when possible. Induction presentation, hands-on activities. 4 nights in basic tented accommodation with veld views.

Depending on our flight time, we may have time for a leisurely breakfast and morning activity before being transferred to the International Airport approximately 3 hours before our scheduled flight departure.
