Safari summary
Often considered the most beautiful route featuring captivating scenes, Lemosho is one of the best routes for acclimatization. This route takes hikers through rain forest inhabited wildlife to the world-famous Shira Plateau. This is one of the few routes where an armed ranger accompanies our groups, since there are still animals in the forest around the Lemosho Glades.
Lemosho begins in a lush and rich rainforest. It is the first ecological zone you will come across on Kilimanjaro (we will trek through four). The path ascends and crosses the Shira Plateau, which was once Kilimanjaro's third summit before collapsing. Then we head north to Moir Hut, which serves as an excellent acclimatization day due to the small treks available in the neighboring Lent Hills. Then we ascend high up and past Lava Tower before plunging into Barranco Valley, one of the most beautiful sections of the path. We scale the daunting Barranco Wall before looping around the southern circuit to Karanga and high camp at Barafu Hut.
The summit attempt is made from Barafu early in the morning, often during a full moon. This is the coldest and windiest part of your journey. However, most of your excess clothing can be removed once the sun rises. The descent follows the Mweka route after the summit.
Lemosho route was carefully designed with shorter elevation gains, longer distances and more time for acclimatization to the altitude, to allow trekkers the best chance of reaching the summit. It is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate.

LEMOSHO GATE TO MTI MKUBWA CAMP
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast and briefing, drive to Londorossi Park Gate (about a 3-hour drive) for registration. Our porters prepare and pack our supplies and luggage before we start our ascent along the forest trail to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) campsite at 2895m. where we will stay overnight. From here a forest track requiring a 4WD vehicle leads to Lemosho Glades. Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite.
Mti Mkubwa Camp
MTI MKUBWA CAMP TO SHIRA 1 CAMP
Kilimanjaro
Our journey continues eastwards across the Shira Plateau with spectacular views of Shira Cathedral. We cross moorland meadow to reach Shira 1 Camp for dinner and overnight camping at 3500m. By now we will be able to see the stunning glaciers of the Western Breach. It will be colder tonight than the previous night with temperatures possibly falling below freezing.
Shira 1 Camp
SHIRA 1 CAMP TO MOIR HUT
Kilimanjaro
We leave the forest behind now and the trail gets steeper as it enters the moorland zone. A gentle grade walk takes you across the high altitude Shira Caldera to Moir Hut with fabulous views of Arrow glacier. We will camp here for the night at 4200m.
Moir Hut Camp
MOIR HUT TO BARRANCO CAMP
Kilimanjaro
Today we will climb up to 4600m to the base of Lava Tower for lunch and acclimatization. This will be our toughest day so far and you may, for the first time, feel the altitude. After lunch we will descend again by almost 650m to Barranco Camp. Our descent to Barranco Camp offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photos of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall.
Barranco Camp
BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
Kilimanjaro
A short but fun day, starting with a scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite.
Karanga Camp
KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
Kilimanjaro
We leave Karanga campsite behind to meet the junction connecting with the Mweka descent trail. From here we continue up to Barafu Camp. You have now completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. At camp, we can rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be clearly seen from this position.
Barafu Campsite
BARAFU CAMP - SUMMIT - MWEKA CAMP
Kilimanjaro
You will be woken around 23:30 with tea and biscuits. before we start our trek to the summit. At Stella Point (5732m), we will stop for a short rest and witness the magnificent sunrise (weather permitting). We are now only an hour away from the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. From the summit, we descend down to Mweka camp site, via Barafu for lunch. Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
Mweka Camp
MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE TO HOTEL
After breakfast we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). African Delight Safaris vehicle will be waiting for you at Mweka gate to drive you back to your hotel (booked for a 1 night stay) in Moshi (around 60 minutes). This will be the end of our journey with you
