Rwenzori Mountain is a block mountain in western Uganda along Uganda-Congo boarder. The range comprises of 6 distinctive mountains with the highest as mount Stanley (5109m) 16762ft, Speke (4890m), and baker (4843m) with bear permanent snow and glaciers despite their location of just miles north of the equator. Rwenzori have one of Africa’s most fantastic natural environments, the climate is mainly identified as one of the most unique, similar to alpine climate though found in an equatorial location which means the mountains receives higher levels of rainfall than anywhere else in the world.
Rwenzori is notable of the 3 horned chameleon, blue monkeys, bush bucks, golden cats, giant forest hogs, red duiker, and forest elephant, Rwenzori climbing mouse, rock hydrax, genet mongoose, birds and many more. The park offers spectacular views of the scenic landscape with a high density of trees and other unique vegetation
Rwenzori Mountains have two hiking trails the Rwenzori central circuit the oldest and most popular trail used to get to the stunning margherita peak. The tail is less challenging; it has views of other portal peaks like baker, Speke and Stanley, vegetation terrain, bird species, mammals and primates.
Kilembe trail is more challenging to get to the peak, it is rough and complicated to win (less experienced hikers are not recommended to take this trail)it’s difficult and very steep making you lose a lot of energy along the hiking process. It offers beautiful views of changing scenery like the forested area, rocky areas, boggy environment as well as the pristine environment.
The trek starts and ends in Kampala and follows the central circuit. The trek/ hike to margherita peak offers a truly fantastic and unique African mountain climbing safari experience hiking through the tropical Montana rain forest on lower slopes inhabited by shy forest elephants, chimpanzees, hydrax, bush bucks, golden cats then the beautiful bare black rocks and tussocked moorland studded with surreal giant lobelias and groundsels on the mountain’s upper slopes.
On reaching the summit, you will be fascinated by a series of craggy black peaks coated in permanent equatorial snow and ice.
Summiting margherita allows you to follow the footsteps of the great Duke of Abruzzi Luigi de Amadeo who was the first to submit it at 9:30am on June 18th 1906
