Day 1
Akagera
Day 1: Arrival – Transfer to Akagera National Park Upon arrival at Kigali Airport, you will be received by a representative from Africa Nature Trekkers and one of our drivers / guides, drive you to your booked accommodation. After morning breakfast, you be picked by the guide and begin a scenic drive to Akagera National Park, reaching early for lunch at Akagera game Lodge. After lunch, go for afternoon game drives where you will view Elephants, Zebras and Impalas among others as they graze. Overnight at Akagera Game Lodge
Day 2
Day 2: Morning Game Drive, Boat Cruise Early morning, take an early morning game drive into the northern part of the park to catch up with early raisers before they go into hiding. You will have chance to see herds of game animals including lions, Elephants, Topi, Antelopes, Giraffes, Bush Bucks and over 430 species of birds including the shoebill stork, African Jacana, among others. Go back to the hotel for relaxation by 11:00am, and then lunch. After lunch, go for afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema, where you will be rewarded with view of game as hippos, crocodiles, etc. After the boat trip you will continue your exploration along the lakes Kivumba, Hago; Mihindi and Rwanyakizinga. They are the most interesting part of the park especially for birders. In the late evening you will return to the giraffe valley which is usually full of surprises. Overnight at your lodge
Day 3
Akagera | Nyungwe Forest
Day 3: Akagera – Nyungwe Forest National Park In the morning, you will set off a long drive to Nyungwe National park. You will have en route stopover in Nyanza museum, Butare museum among other areas good for photography and adventure, as well as lunch. Reach Nyungwe in the evening for dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Forest Lodge / Nyungwe Top View Lodge
Day 4
Nyungwe Forest
Day 4: Chimp Tracking & Guided Nature Walk Early start tracking for the chimpanzees, this can take anything from a few hours to a full day depending on where the chimpanzees are. It should be mentioned that it is not guaranteed to see the chimps as they are unpredictable and can move long distances in one day. There are several other primates in Nyungwe such as the Rwenzori colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, Silver monkey, Owl faced monkey and the Grey cheeked Mangabey. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation; in the evening while on a nature walk, birders will be interested to know that Nyungwe has also some Albertine rift endemic species that can only be seen here. Day 5
Day 5: Nyungwe Forest – Lake Kivu An early morning breakfast you will set off a spectacular drive to Kibuye passing through breath-taking mountains, deep valleys, and the typical Rwandan topography. You will have a lunch stopover at Hotel Bethanie. You may have an optional relaxation at the lake shore or carry out a boat trip on Lake Kivu. Overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel
Day 6
Volcanoes
Day 6: Lake Kivu – Transfer to Parc National Des Volcans This morning after breakfast you can start the day by relaxing at the sandy beach and do beach activities, including sunbathing, spot fishing, volley ball and in the afternoon after lunch take a boat cruise to the coffee island and on the lake different species of birds can be spotted out among other animals that feed on and around the Lake. In the late afternoon, head to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla tracking activity, arriving late for overnight at Kinigi Guest House / Gorilla Nest Lodge / Hotel La Palme Hotel
Day 7
Virunga
Day 7: Gorilla Trekking Have an early morning breakfast and drive to the park headquarters of Parc National des Volcans. After a briefing from the ranger guides, you will start the gorilla trekking through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga. Hiking and tracking gorillas may take 1-8 hours. Sight and stay with the Gorillas for one hour and be back at the base in time for a late lunch. You may have an optional Ibyiwacu Community walk OR a relaxation at the lodge. Day 8
Virunga | Volcanoes
Day 8: Day two Gorilla Trek – Transfer to Kigali Second day of gorilla tracking in the Virunga Volcanoes; Other activities to have on this day will include a visit to the top of the Bisoke volcano of which the distinctive feature is a beautiful crater lake, visit the grave of Dian Fossey and the former Karisoke Research Centre, track the newly habituated groups of Golden Monkeys including the Kabatwa and Musanga troops lives near the Karisimbi volcano. Day 9
Day 9: Kigali City Tour – Departure Have morning breakfast, you will enjoy a Kigali city tour on the way visit Mirambi Genocide Memorial Sites and other sites if time allows, have lunch en route and then transfer to the airport to meet your departure flight back home and say farewell to Rwanda.
