Safari summary
Located in Tanzania's Eastern Rift Valley, Mount Oldoinyo Lengai, meaning "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language, is a striking geological wonder. This active volcano stands as the only one in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, making it an invaluable site for geologists. Rising 2,000 meters above the Rift Valley floor, its summit reaches a height of about 2,886 meters, offering a dramatic landscape.
Part of the Great Rift Valley's volcanic system, Mount Oldoinyo Lengai is situated in northern Tanzania, south of Lake Natron and near the Kenyan border. It is unique not only for its active status in this region, but also for its volcanic activity, which distinguishes it from other extinct volcanoes in the area. A true marvel of nature, it produces rare volcanic carbonate, a feature not seen in other active volcanoes around the world.
Visiting Mount Oldoinyo Lengai offers an opportunity to explore a sacred Maasai landmark and witness one of Earth's rarest geological phenomena.
