Rwenzori mountain trekking and climbing safari is for travelers or for beginners but want to hike this UNESCO world heritage site. The hike starts at Trekkers Hostel in Kyanjuki, located at 1,450 meters above sea level and 12 kilometers from Kasese. It is best to start by 9 am but can leave as late as 11am. You will walk 2.2km to the UWA rangers post at 1,727 meters, which takes about one hour. This is where briefing takes place about the rules Rwenzori Mountain National Park. Restricted numbers of viewing permits help protect the endangered gorilla families.

Itinerary
Arrival and Transfer to Rwenzori
You will be welcomed by a representative of Peoples Choice tours at Entebbe Airport. From here you will be transferred to Kampala and continue to Mbarara Town, before heading for the foothills of the Mountains of Moon for your dinner and overnight.

Steady walk with a steep climb
At the park offices you will be briefed and then start by walking up the valley floor through tall forest trees of the Afro Montane Forest Zone. Watch a multitudes of birds and a chance of seeing a wild chimpanzee or blue monkey scampering off through the forest. Look out for the L’Hoest monkey which are part of the Bukonzo cultural emblems. You will see variety of plant species from forest trees to bamboos thickets,

Hike to Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone
After breakfast, you will start your trek in to the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone. This zone is a steep climb with many high steps. In the wet season the bamboo area is rather muddy and slippery making the trek slow. However, the atmosphere and the forest are beautiful as you climb 551 metres altitude and a distance of 1.8km to Kalalama Camp at 3,147 meters which is in the Heather – Rapanea Zone where you can take a rest and a quick cup of tea or coffee before heading on to Mutinda Camp.

Mutinda camp – Kiharo camp
Today after early breakfast, you will hike from summit Mutinda peaks then climb up past Lake Nsuranga to Kiharo Camp at 3,380 metres directly at the base of some good granite rock climbs of 20 to 40 metres, with towering peaks above. You may opt to do a spot of rock climbing before settling down for the evening.

Kiharo camp to Samalira camp
Today, you will descend to Samalira camp, which takes about 3 to 4hours ,after breakfast you start descending down through the giant heather trees which make up most of the vegetation from Kiharo to Samalira past the small garden on lobelias.This is a flat trail trek down for the first 2 hours with very beautiful views of river Nyamwamba across then you hike up a ridge for about 45minutes then sloping down to Samalira camp 3174m

Descend from Samalira Camp
Today, you will descend from Samalira down a long ridge, through the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone and Afro Montane Forest Zone back down to base camp in Kilembe

Equator for photographs and crafts/ souvenirs; you will also have a lunch stopover in Mbarara at Igongo cultural center. Dinner and overnight at Ruhija Gorilla Safari lodge, Bwindi

Before you start the real tracking you will gather at the Uganda Wildlife Authority meeting area. Here you will find other people as well who will track with you in the same group. A clear briefing will be given to you on what you can expect during the day as well as safety rules and behavior when you are meeting the gentle giants. After the introduction it is time for you to start searching for the Gorilla’s. We can never tell you how long it will take for you to see them.

Bwindi to Lake Mburo
After breakfast you will transfer to Lake Mburo national park, you will arrive at the park in time for Lunch. After lunch, transfer to numerous lakes. You will also see many hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, buffaloes, etc. You will view the malachite kingfishers, African Fish eagles, blue headed weavers, Rufuos long tailed starlings, the pied kingfishers, hammerkobs, Herons, pelicans, the rare shoebill. You will then proceed to Entebbe airport depending on the schedule of your flight.
