Itinerary

Day 1

Virunga

Day 1 Meet at Cyanika border with Uganda with an AAS guide. Drive to Kinigi,, the main base centre for Gorilla trekking. This journey will be of about 40 minutes from the border. The lodge is only minutes away from the headquarters of the Parc National des Volcans from where clients trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla  perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible. The lodge, situated in the foothills of the mighty Virungas, the chain of 15,000 ft volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, affords wonderful views of the volcanoes and the surrounding countryside. Guest cottages and the main lodge building have been beautifully constructed and appointed and the lodge is the perfect base from which to explore this unique and fascinating corner of Africa. Overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (D,B,L)

Day 2

Virunga | Volcanoes

Day 2 The main Virunga Mountains and the Parc National des Volcans where clients trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorillas. Gorilla trekking is perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible. There are, however, plenty of other natural, cultural and social excursions on offer to help you make the most of your stay. After an early breakfast, drive for 20 minutes to the Volcanoes National Park’s Headquarters. Gorilla treks take place in the morning and depart from the Park Headquarters at around 07:30am. Prior to departure you are given a briefing by park staff, assigned a gorilla family to visit and rangers to guide you. The treks take place on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes and clients should be in good physical condition as some of the trek can be physically demanding. Your trek will vary in length and will commence at an altitude of about 2000 meters in the upper terraced slopes of the volcanoes. Soon you enter the forest for Gorilla tracking. The trek normally lasts between 2 and 5 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family and a maximum of eight visitors is allowed per gorilla family. Once you reach the gorillas you are permitted to stay for one hour to view them. . Lunch at the Lodge. Afternoon visit the little beautiful compellingly twin lakes Bulera & Ruhondo. Overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 3

Volcanoes

Day 3 After an early breakfast, we re-enter the forest. Trekking to see the golden monkeys is another highlight of Volcanoes National Park. The Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Mitis Kandti) is a local subspecies of the widespread Sykes Monkey, also known as the “Blue Monkey” and is endemic to the high altitude forests. The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor. There are two habituated groups of Golden Monkey, one group comprises around 80 - 100 members and has its home at the foot of Mt Sabyinyo. As with treks to see the Mountain Gorillas, treks to see the Golden Monkeys take place in the mornings and visitors are permitted to stay for 1 hour with the monkeys. Departure for the Golden Monkey trek is from the Park’s Kinigi Headquarters at 07:00am. The number of visitors is not limited. Trek to see the Dian Fossey’s tomb and Karisoke Gorilla research centre. These two activities are similar to gorilla trekking in terms of formalities and logistical preparation. Overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 4

Day 4 After a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, depart for Kigali (2 hours on a good paved road) enjoying the beautiful scenic views of the rural Rwanda. In Kigali, visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial, a grim reminder of the senseless massacres that occurred in the 1994 genocide and have a city tour of the capital. Later in the afternoon, you will be transferred to the airport.
