Safari summary

Hippo Camp is located just outside the Selous Game Reserve, close to Mtemere gate. It is beautifully set right on the banks of the Rufiji River, surrounded by lush riverine forest. A close-by pond attracts herds of elephant, giraffe, warthog and other game that can be clearly viewed from our tree-hut as they come to quench their thirst. The dining area as well as the tents all face the river and you can enjoy your sundowner on front-row as the sun sinks over the water in an explosion of orange, yellow, red and pink and the sounds of the African night set in.

The canvas tented huts blend harmoniously into the camp’s natural surroundings. They all face the Rufiji and allow for a cool and pleasant flow of river breeze. We have also introduced some VIP wooden huts, a couple with double story rooms and one with a single room raised on poles high above the ground. Each room has twin beds, en-suite bathrooms and a relaxing little verandah.

The camp has a central dining area with an adjoining bar. Additionally, a small dining area is set near
the VIP wooden huts. At the moment, meals are provided on request. The camp is supplied with meat and vegetables from its own farm across the river. Other purchases of food and drinks are made locally. Laundry services are available on request.

The camp is supplied with clean water from a deep well and electricity is supplied by two generators.

Itinerary

Day 1

Nyerere (Selous)

Day 1 - Depart to Selous Game Reserve and an evening boat safari You will be picked up at the airport or in Dar es Salaam, then driven to Selous Game Reserve, which takes approximately five to six hours with lunch on the way. Upon arrival, check in at Selous Hippo Camp. In the evening, go for an evening boat safari through the Rufiji River. This safari allows you to experience the aquatic life, mostly crocodiles and hippos. You can see some animals come for drinking and you can also see an uncountable number of bird species since the reserve has over 440 species of birds, while enjoying an amazing reserve’s sunset. Back in the late evening for dinner and stay the night at Selous Hippo Camp. Lunch and dinner are included.

Day 2

Nyerere (Selous)

Day 2 - Full day game drive at Selous Game Reserve You will have an early breakfast at 7:00 a.m., and then drive to the Selous Game Reserve. You will have a full-day game drive in a specially modified safari vehicle with a professional guide, in which you should see and learn much about a large number of animals, including all the great favorites, lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, and all the other major species including the rare African hunting dog. There will also be a great variety of bird species with wonderful scenery and varied topography: wetlands, dry grassland, light acacia forest, and higher ground with long views of far-off mountains. Enjoy your packed lunch and time to rest. Your guide will select a location with shade and water nearby to watch the animals coming to drink, a place with a clear view all round, so that no predator can creep up unseen. You will be back at Selous Hippo Camp by 6:30 p.m. for sunset and dinner. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 3

Day 3 - Early morning walking safari and depart to Dar es Salaam You will have an early morning walking safari with a bushman across the reserve’s environment to learn various histories, including traditional trees for medicines, various animal footprints, and other small animals which you cannot see during the game drive. You will go back to the camp for breakfast afterwards. After breakfast, drive back to Dar es Salaam with lunch on the way. You will arrive in the early evening, and Gecko Adventure Tanzania will take you back to the hotel or catch your flight back home. Breakfast and lunch are included.
