Safari summary
The Lemosho route is considered to be the best route on Mt Kilimanjaro. It’s possible to trek this route in six days, however here at Wayfairer we follow an eight day itinerary which allows you to ascend steadily with plenty of time to get acclimatised to the high altitudes. This longer itinerary helps to maximise your overall enjoyment and your chances of reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak.

We recommend that you try and get an early night ahead of your Mt Kilimanjaro trek which will start the following day. Overnight: Arusha Meals: (_/_/_)
Day 2
Day 2: After breakfast your local guide will meet you at your lodge and you will drive together to Londorrosi Gate where you’ll go through the registration process and you’ll have a briefing session before you meeting the rest of your trekking team. The trek begins on the lower slopes of the mountain and follows a wilderness trail passing through dense rainforest up to the Shira Plateau. This area is teeming with wildlife, including black & white ‘caped’ Colobus Monkeys. Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 3
Day 3: Today you’ll start to ascend up into the alpine moorland. The flora changes once you’re out of the rainforest with fig and rubber trees making way for the Giant Heather and Erica. The most challenging part of the day involves climbing over Shira Ridge at 3600m, before descending onto the Shira Plateau to camp. Overnight: Shira 1 Camp Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 4
Day 4: Today you will cross the wild heath and moorlands of the Shira Plateau, notorious for its beautiful indigenous flowers and unique plants such as the Giant Lobelia. Your steady climb across the Shira Plateau will help with acclimatisation and you’ll enjoy incredible panoramic views. Overnight: Shira 2 Camp Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 5
Day 5: Today you’ll trek to Lava Tower at 4630m and then you’ll make your way down into Barranco Valley. After the rocky, bleak terrain past the Lava Tower, the landscape in the valley starts to change into a surreal, shrub land with Giant Groundsels. You’ll spend the night at Barranco Camp which offers spectacular views of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. Overnight: Barranco Camp Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 6
Kilimanjaro
Day 6: Today starts with a short steep ascent of the daunting Barranco Wall - this can be quite a challenge, however your effort is rewarded with phenomenal views of the Hiem Glacier and the summit of Kilimanjaro. Then you’ll make a gentle descent into the Karanga Valley followed by a short ascent to your campsite at 4035m. In the afternoon you’ll complete an acclimatisation walk towards Barafu and then you’ll have some time to rest and take in the views from Karanga Camp. Overnight: Karanga Camp Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 7
Day 7: This following morning you’ll set off towards the final camp, Barafu, where we can see two of the three peaks, Mawenzi and Kibo. It will be difficult to sleep, however it is essential that you try to get some rest as in the early tomorrow morning you will begin your ascent to the summit to see the sun rise from the roof of Africa. Overnight: Barafu Camp Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 8
Day 8: In the very early hours of this morning you’ll start your ascent by torchlight to climb to Stella Point at 5685m. It is a long and hard climb at high altitude, but experiencing sunrise from Stella Point is a moment that you will remember for the rest of your life. If you’re still feeling strong enough you can then walk around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5895m. After taking time to enjoy your achievement and taking photographs at the summit sign, you’ll descend back down to Barafu Camp for a rest and something to eat, before descending further down the mountain to Mweka Camp. Overnight: Mweka Camp Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Day 9
Arusha
Day 9: On your final day of the trek you’ll walk down through the lush rainforest, enjoying the increasing warmth and richness of the mountain air. Overnight: Arusha Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/_)
