Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha | Kilimanjaro

Day 1  Arrive in Arusha/Kilimanjaro Airport - Moshi Town  You will be picked up from Arusha Town or Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Moshi Town, commonly known as the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 2

Day 2  Moshi Town - Umbwe Cave Camp; Trek, Hike & Safari (Approx. 8 km/6-7 hrs) The majority of the hike on this first day is through the Montana Forest. Lush vegetation with very old trees and lilts of ferns and mosses mark this as an area that gets rain year round. The forest abounds with wildlife; small bushbuck & duikers as well as monkeys. There is also a rich and varied bird life. The first three hours or so is on gently rising land before steepening for the last two hours. The camp for the night is in a small clearing on the trail. (Elevation: 2,940m/9,500 ft Habitat: Montana Forest)

Day 3

Kilimanjaro

Day 3  Umbwe Cave Camp - Barranco Camp; Trek & Hike (Approx. 8 km/6-7 hrs) Shortly after starting the hike, the forest gradually gives way to the giant heath. The trail has been following a ridge for some time and as it ascends through the heath land, the ridge narrows and sharpens, finally becoming like a knife edge with steep drops on each side. As the height of the heath reduces, there are stunning views of both Kilimanjaro’s southern flank and Mount Meru. The camp overlooks the Barranco Valley with views up towards Arrow Glacier. (Elevation: 3860 m/12,800 ft Habitat: Alpine Desert)

Day 4

Day 4  Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp; Trek & Hike (Approx. 7 km/4 hrs) On the eastern side of the valley, across the stream, is the Barranco Wall - a 950 ft. barrier of volcanic rock. It is very easy to climb despite its height and steepness. Enjoy the spectacular views from the wall. The rest of the day is spent skirting the base of Kibo peak over your left shoulder. Descend down into the Karanga Valley, where you stay overnight before the tough climb up to Barafu hut. (Elevation: 3,860 m- 4,000 m/12,700 ft-13,800 ft Habitat: Alpine Desert)

Day 5

Day 5  Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp; Trek & Hike (Approx. 7 km/6 hrs)  From Karanga, the route heads up a moraine ridge. The views here can be spectacular on the southern glaciers and of the glacial valleys that snake their way down the mountain. The final stage to Barafu is quite steep, and as always, it's taken very slowly. You reach camp by around lunch time, leaving lots of time to prepare and relax. In the evening your guide briefs you for the final ascent. (Elevation: 4,600 m/15,100 ft Habitat: Alpine Desert)

Day 6

Kilimanjaro

Day 6  Barafu Camp - Summit - Mweka Hut; Trek & Hike (Approx. 30 km/16 hrs) Very early in the morning (midnight to 2:00 am), continue your way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Head in a northwestern direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is a mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (5685 m/18,652 ft), stop for a short break and get a chance to enjoy the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From here, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1 hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you reach the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit. It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day. So please carry appropriate clothing for both extremes. From the summit, continue straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will need gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. (Elevation: 5,895 m/19,300 ft Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit)

Day 7

Day 7  Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate - Moshi Town; Trek & Hike (Approx. 15 km/5 hrs)  After breakfast, continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). At the gate you will be met by your driver and transferred back to a base hotel in Moshi for dinner and overnight stay. (Elevation: 3100 m-1830 m/10,200 ft-6000 ft Habitat: Forest)

Day 8

Arusha

Day 8  Moshi Town - Arusha Town, Departure  After breakfast, transfer back to Arusha town for your final departure. You may choose to extend your trip by clubbing this trek with a safari of your choice
