Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Kilimanjaro
Zone: Rainforest After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Machame Gate for registration. The trek begins through the beautiful rainforest zone with tall trees and rich vegetation. Climbers may see monkeys and colorful birds along the trail. After several hours of hiking, arrive at Machame Camp (3000m) where dinner and overnight camping are prepared.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Zone: Moorland Leave Machame Camp and hike through the moorland zone with amazing views of the mountain. The trail becomes steeper and the vegetation changes to giant heathers and volcanic rock landscapes. Arrive at Shira Camp (3840m) in the afternoon with excellent views of Mount Kilimanjaro and surrounding valleys.

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp Barranc

Zone: Alpine Desert This day helps the body acclimatize to higher altitude. The trek climbs toward Lava Tower (4630m) where lunch is taken. After spending some time at high altitude, descend to Barranco Camp (3950m) for overnight. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps improve acclimatization.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Zone: Alpine Desert Start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but exciting section of the route. After reaching the top, continue across valleys and ridges toward Barafu Camp (4670m). This is the base camp for the summit attempt. Dinner is served early and climbers rest before the midnight summit climb.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Zone: Arctic Summit Around midnight the summit attempt begins. The climb passes through Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and continue down to Mweka Camp (3100m) for overnight.

Zone: Rainforest After breakfast descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. At the gate climbers receive their summit certificates and say goodbye to the mountain crew. Transfer back to the hotel in Moshi to celebrate the successful Kilimanjaro climb.
