Itinerary

Lemosho to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, transfer to Londorosi Gate (about three hours from Moshi) for registration, then continue by vehicle along a forest track to the Lemosho trailhead. Begin your ascent through untouched rainforest on a gentle trail ideal for acclimatization. Colobus monkeys and small antelopes are commonly seen, and buffalo or elephants may appear. After three to four hours of trekking, arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, shaded by towering trees.

Mti Mkubwa Camp

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, begin a steady climb through the moorland zone, where vegetation thins and expansive views open up. As you ascend along a rocky ridge, enjoy your first clear views of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s summit cone. You’ll reach the Shira Plateau, a dramatic collapsed volcanic crater and the oldest of the mountain’s three cones. The trail eases across the plateau before arriving at Shira Camp, with panoramic views on clear days.

Shira 1 Camp

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, continue hiking along a rocky ridge onto the vast Shira Plateau, where expansive views open toward the eastern slopes and the dramatic Western Breach glaciers. Now positioned on the western side of Kibo Peak, a final gradual walk leads to Shira 2 Camp. Warm tea, coffee, and light snacks are served on arrival before dinner. This exposed campsite is significantly colder, with nighttime temperatures often dropping below freezing.

Shira 2 Camp

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

Kilimanjaro

The trail transitions into semi-desert terrain as you approach Lava Tower, a striking 300-foot volcanic formation. Ascend the rocky scree for sweeping panoramic views before descending steeply into Barranco Valley. This is often a more demanding day, as altitude effects may begin to appear. Despite ending at a similar elevation to where you started, the climb greatly aids acclimatization. Barranco Camp sits in a scenic, sheltered valley beneath the towering Barranco Wall.

Barranco Camp

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Kilimanjaro

This will be a shorter day of hiking to allow for acclimatization. After breakfast, you will begin to ascend the Barranco Wall and hike glacial valleys—but don’t worry, it is easier than it looks! From the top of the wall, You will then cross a series of hills and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley. After one more steep Climb, and you’ll reach Karanga Camp, where you will relax for the afternoon before dinner and an overnight rest.

Karanga Camp

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, depart Karanga and follow the trail to the junction connecting with the Mweka Route. Continue along a rocky ridge for one to two hours until reaching Barafu Camp, positioned high on an exposed crest with striking views of Kilimanjaro’s summit. Tents are set on a narrow, windswept ridge, so take time to settle in and familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark. Rest early, hydrate well, and prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Barafu Camp

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak

Kilimanjaro

Just before midnight, begin the final ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Trek northwest through loose scree, following steep switchbacks between the Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers to Stella Point (5,756m). This is the most demanding section, requiring a steady pace and mental resilience. After a brief rest, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the Roof of Africa. After photos, descend to Barafu, then onward to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for dinner and rest.

Mweka Camp

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Kilimanjaro

After eating breakfast, you will begin the easiest part of your adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro via a scenic path through the forest to Mweka Gate. Successful hikers who made it to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak will be awarded their certificates at the gate. Then it’s time to drive back to your hotel to enjoy a shower, dinner and celebrations with a Kilimanjaro beer!
