This 8-day itinerary offers excellent acclimatization, diverse landscapes, and a gradual ascent profile that maximizes summit success.
Beginning on the remote western side of the mountain, climbers experience untouched rainforest, dramatic ridgelines, the iconic Shira Plateau, and breathtaking views before conquering Uhuru Peak.

Itinerary
Arrival Day
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, complete immigration and customs formalities before meeting our driver outside the arrivals area. You’ll then transfer to Arusha Town and check in at your hotel. In the evening, meet your Head Guide for a full pre-climb briefing, equipment check, and Q&A session to ensure you’re fully prepared for the adventure ahead.

Elevation: 1,200 m → 2,100 m → 2,750 m Distance: Approx. 11 km Hiking Time: 3–4 hours Habitat: Montane Forest After breakfast, depart Arusha for Londorossi Gate. At the gate, the guides and porters complete registration and park formalities. The trek begins through lush rainforest, home to colobus and blue monkeys. After a short lunch break en route, continue to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, arriving in the early evening. Dinner is freshly prepared by the camp chef.

Mti Mkubwa Camp - Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,750 m → 3,540 m Distance: Approx. 8 km Hiking Time: 5–6 hours Habitat: Moorland Leave the rainforest behind and enter a moorland environment of heather, tall grasses, and volcanic rock draped with lichens. As you climb, enjoy sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. Cross several streams before ascending to the Shira Ridge, then descend slightly into the Shira Plateau to reach Shira 1 Camp. From here, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak across the plateau.

Shira 1 Camp - Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,540 m → 3,840 m Distance: Approx. 15 km Hiking Time: 5–7 hours Habitat: Moorland After breakfast, continue east across the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. The gentle trail offers excellent views of Kibo’s glaciered summit and the Northern Ice Fields. You’ll reach Shira 2 Camp, beautifully situated by a stream on moorland meadows — an ideal location for acclimatization and photography.

Shira 2 - Lava Tower - Barranco

Elevation: 3,840 m → 4,600 m → 3,950 m Distance: Approx. 15 km Hiking Time: 6–7 hours Habitat: Semi-Desert Today is an important acclimatization day. Trek east toward the striking Lava Tower. Packed lunch will be served at the tower, and weather permitting, you may attempt a short climb on it. Here, you may start feeling mild effects of altitude a normal part of the process. After lunch, descend to Barranco Camp, located in a sheltered valley beneath the spectacular Great Barranco Wall.

Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,950 m → 3,959 m Distance: Approx. 5 km Hiking Time: 4–5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert After breakfast, begin the exciting climb up the Great Barranco Wall. Though it looks steep, it’s non-technical and fun to climb. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of Heim Glacier and the cloud-filled valleys below. Continue along a winding trail through alpine desert terrain to reach Karanga Camp, situated in a high valley with stunning scenery.

Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,959 m → 4,600 m Distance: Approx. 4 km Hiking Time: 2–3 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert After breakfast, ascend steadily toward Barafu Camp, located on a rocky ridge above the clouds. “Barafu” means ice in Swahili, and the name suits the chilly, exposed location. This is your final stop before the summit push — familiarize yourself with the terrain and rest. An early dinner is served so you can sleep by 7:00 PM before the midnight summit attempt.

Barafu - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,600 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m Distance: 7 km ascent / 23 km descent Hiking Time: 8 hrs ascent / 7 hrs descent Habitat: Stone Scree & Ice-Capped Summit At midnight, wake up for tea and biscuits, then begin your summit attempt. After about 6 hours, you’ll reach Stella Point. Continue for another 2 hours along a snow covered path to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Celebrate briefly, take photos, and begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a lunch. Continue downward to Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate - Arusha

Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,980 m → 1,200 m Distance: Approx. 15 km Hiking Time: 3–4 hours Habitat: Forest After breakfast, enjoy a cheerful celebration with your crew — singing, dancing, and farewells. Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Proceed to Mweka Village for a hot lunch before driving back to Arusha Town.

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning at leisure. Check out by 11:00 AM, then transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home — leaving Tanzania with unforgettable memories of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
