Safari summary
Embark on the ultimate mountain adventure with a 9-day journey to the roof of Africa — Mount Kilimanjaro — combined with exploration of the spectacular Kilimanjaro National Park. Standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 ft), Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest peak and the world’s highest free-standing mountain, attracting climbers from across the globe seeking both challenge and inspiration.
Located in northeastern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, Kilimanjaro National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its ecological diversity. The mountain features five distinct climate zones — cultivated foothills, lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the icy Arctic summit — each offering unique landscapes, wildlife, and plant species. Trekkers experience an ever-changing environment, from misty forest trails to barren lava fields, culminating in the dramatic glacial summit.
Over nine days, climbers ascend gradually along scenic trails, allowing proper acclimatization to minimize altitude sickness and maximize success. Wildlife sightings, including colobus monkeys, exotic birds, and giant groundsels, add to the adventure. Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is a life-changing moment, with panoramic views stretching across East Africa. This journey combines physical challenge, natural beauty, and the thrill of standing atop a continent’s highest point — an unforgettable adventure for determined travelers seeking both personal achievement and connection with nature.

Transfer to the Machame Gate and begin your climb through dense rainforest filled with giant trees, hanging moss, and vibrant birdlife. The trail gradually ascends through lush greenery, offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys. Machame Camp
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the open moorland zone, characterized by giant heathers and towering lobelias. Enjoy breathtaking vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks as you cross the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic areas. The trail is moderately challenging, and the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic with every step. Shira Camp sits at a high altitude, providing good acclimatization for the next stage of the climb. Hiking Time: 4–6 hours Habitat: Moorland
Shira Camp
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Today’s hike includes an acclimatization stop at Lava Tower, a jagged volcanic rock formation at 4,630 meters. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to altitude. After reaching Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp through a mix of rocky paths and sparse vegetation. Along the way, take in sweeping views of valleys and ridges, and observe unique high-altitude flora. Barranco Camp is a perfect spot to rest and prepare for the challenging Barranco Wall tomorrow.
Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin the day with the climb up the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep rock face requiring careful steps and teamwork. Once atop, traverse high ridges and rolling valleys toward Karanga Camp. Along this section, the landscape gradually transitions into alpine desert, with dramatic rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. This moderate trek strengthens your legs and endurance for the final summit push.
Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Trek steadily through barren alpine desert terrain toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. The trail becomes increasingly steep and rocky, with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks dominating the horizon. Arrive in the early afternoon, have a light meal, and rest. Hydrate and mentally prepare for the midnight climb. Early sleep is recommended for the long night ahead
Barafu Camp
Summit Day – Uhuru Peak to Mweka
Start your climb around midnight under the stars. Trek slowly up the steep scree and rocky paths to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Experience the breathtaking panorama of East Africa, feel the exhilaration of standing on Africa’s highest point, and take memorable photos. After a brief celebration, descend to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue to Mweka Camp in the rainforest for rest.
Mweka Camp
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Complete your descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Walk through scenic forest trails, passing streams, moss-covered trees, and occasional wildlife sightings. At the gate, receive your official summit certificate. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned hot shower, celebratory meal, and restful evening.
