It entails traveling 35 kilometers from Moshi to the first camp, Machame, at a height of 3000 meters, and returning over the same path the same day. Once there, you must register, pay, and receive a legal permit. The hike begins at Machame Gate at 1800, and it takes 4-5 hours in each direction to travel the 11 kilometers (22 km round trip) to Machame Camp.
